Small animal Vets or student stdying to be a vet...?

Question

I know beyond a doubt that my cat has tapeworms. My other stray I took in was neutered about a week ago and they treated him so I have checked the other animal sin the household and found that one other has tapeworms also. The fleas are taken care of I spent the money and got Advantage to treat them, but now the vet wants to charge me again to see the animal and I do not have the money for that. I barely have the money to buy these pills. petmeds.com has:

A. Which one is best?

I am just north of indianapolis. He wants to charge me 18.50 to bring in some poo! Like I said I barely have the money period. I have taken in 7 stray cats and neutered them and gotten shots and blahhhhh I love them, but I'm running out of money. This vet doesnt seem to be very nice I'm sure he will have no more of my business!

THESE WERE STRAYS LADY and my check book says I have spent 900+ dollars this year already I know what the cat has I just want the correct info on what to give them!

I am also a single mother of one a full time student and it is CHRISTMAS why do you think I want to treat this as cheap as possible?

You wanna get Drontal. Praziquantel is in both Drontal and Droncit to treat tapeworms, Drontal also contains febantel and pyrantel to treat round and whipworms. A lot of times, if a Vet treats and pet with worms and there are other pets in the household, they will then just prescribe dewormer for the other pets as well. Typically one treatment will do the job, but heavy infestations may require another dose one month later. These medications are by prescription only, so you may have a hard time getting them from another Vet without them testing a stool sample. Good luck!

vets can not prescibe medication to a pet they have not recently seen. What if there is an underlying health issue and they prescribe and something happens?

any medication that needs a prescription (cestex is one) can be sold at petmeds, but will need a script from a vet.. so I don't know if you can get it or drontal.

I doubt you'll find any place willing to give you script medication with out seeing your pet..

So you will need to go with the no prescription required type.

Lastly, and I'm sure this was covered, but if you can't afford treatment for tapeworms, what are you going to do if something serious happens? I worked at a vet's office for almost two years, and saw some very strange accidents, including a stick in the eye of a cat. For your own sake (financally and emotionally - as well as legally - since you are feeding and medicating them these are your legal responsiblity now), as well as the sake of the pets, please consider rehoming some of these pets you are taking care of.

Get some Drontal. It treats all types of intestinal worm - one should be enough, although it's advisable to worm every 3 months.

18.50 for a faecal test is cheap. The vet should be able to sell you Drontal without doing a faecal test though. They can dispense it as long as they've seen the animal in the last 6 months. If you request a prescription to buy online they'll probably give you the Drontal so they don't lose money! I don't know of any reason why they would refuse it you if you ask.

I am not sure which is the best worm medicine but I think I'd go for the over-the-counter stuff so you don't have to pay the $35.00 for an office visit with the vet AND the medicine. I think that worm treatment is once or twice, then you wait like a month to make sure that whatever "baby worms" might have been in the cat's system are all the way out of their body. Absolutely contact your humane society and explain your situation. They often have programs where they provide low cost veterinary services for people with limited income. I imagine they would do the same with meds. good luck

If your vet already treated one cat why can't he just give you the meds for the rest? At least just let you take a stool sample in and get a fecal without the cat.
