How do you know those high school/college kids do this on a regular basis? Is it possible that different kids go every night?
Of course it's not healthy. You have food sitting in your stomach through the entire night.

There's nothing wrong with eating late at night, it just depends on what you choose to eat. You're correct in that junk food is the worst thing you can have. Late night meals should be protein and fat based, with the only carbs being whole veggies. Processed carbs are the worst by far as carbs will impede the production of GH by spiking insulin levels (insulin competes with GH). Also, by the end of the day the body's insulin response has lowered so carbs will not be utilized by muscles but more often be added to bodyfat.
What most people don't realize is that the metabolism actually increases the first few hours of sleep then steadily decreases up until waking. This is called the sleeping metabolic rate. Not eating several hours before sleep will lower the SMR as well as lower the production of GH. Also, if you stop eating at "x" time of the day and don't eat again until the morning, that's an extended fast and the body becomes catabolic for a lot longer period of time. So, if you stop eating at 7pm and don't eat again until 7, that's a 12 hour fast.
So, consider high protein foods like cottage cheese, casein or a blended protein shake, something along those lines. Steer clear of processed carbs and simple sugars (fruits included). Just be sure you're not going over your daily caloric intake needs. Yea the people you see who are pigging out on any and everything late at night obviously have no concept of nutrition and probably don't care what the effects are, but it will catch up with them.

I eat alot of food late at night. I'm 21 and have an active lifestyle and am a steady 75kg. I reckon (I'm not even close to being a nutritionist or doctor or whatever) that as long as you're active and don't go way over board, eat what you want. I sometime have high carb meals before bed, and am yet to notice any difference in my weight (that I wasn't planning) for several years.

They actually are. You should never eat any more than three hours before going to bed. Not only is your metabolism slowing down, but you're also putting yourself at risk for acid reflex and heartburn. I did the same things in college. Eating at Applebees and Bennigans late at night. Now I'm 31 with acid reflux and i think a lot of that late night eating has contributed to that. If you get hungry late at night try some yogurt. Not only is it good for your digestion, it's low in calories and very healthy.

he metabolic powers specific foods have to make your physique burn much more body fat.” It is a way of rating foods, based on “how many calories your body is going to burn just breaking down the nutrients each and every time you consume a certain food.”
Therefore, you are not alone in this battle.

it's not good to eat an hour before you go to sleep because your body needs time to digest. otherwise, it's not WHEN you're eating but WHAT, so anybody ordering nachos and cheese sticks is making a bad choice regardless of time of day.
