Apparetnly never.......I work in a nursing home. Many of the residents wear "Clothing Protectors" when they eat (can NOT call them bibs, becuase it is a dignity issue) and use Straw Handled Cups.....so I guess we all go full circle.
I would say use bibs til the child is consistenly not dropping on her shirt anymore. And use sippy cups til she no longer spills. I know Playtex makes ones that are more like a travel coffe mug.......they are not a sippy cup, but they do have lids. they would be good for travel. I would say regular cups and meals and snacks and cups with lids when on the go.

Once they are about 2 I started using real cups at the table, etc where spills don't matter. I still use sippy cups in the car and in the living room, and my oldest is 4. I take a travel coffee mug in the car and a water sports bottle on walks, so what is the difference if he has a sippy cup?? Same thing, really. My youngest is 2 and a half and I wish he would still keep a bib on but he won't.

I have found that soaking clothes in a solution of Dawn and water overnight will get most food stains out. We give our daughter a "big girl" cup at the table, or if she's drinking water around the house. We take a sippy cup when we are going somewhere. She's 2 and hasn't worn a bib for a year, she figured out how to pull them off.

It all depends on when they're ready. My son could feed himself with a spoon and fork and drink from an open cup by a year old, but he was REALLY messy! We also didn't want him running around with an open cup, so we often used straw cups. He didn't have any of the real sippy cups (with a spout) past the age of 1. By 18 months, we stopped using bibs regularly, but still used them if he was eating something really messy and/or wearing an outfit we didn't want him to get dirty. We gave them up for good when he turned two.
I really think it depends on the child. I know some three - year - olds who still can't eat neatly, so there's no harm in wearing a bib.

My daughter will 3 next month and I still give her the cup, lid, straw-type cup so she can't spill. I don't use bibs anymore but I use oxyclean and spray and wash to get her clothes clean. Sometimes it just take elbow grease and a lot of soaking. Good luck!

Mine has just turned 4 and still has both. He drops his food so a bib is just practial, and he spills a lot from a real cup so we limit these to places where spills don't matter - for now. We hope he will be off them both before he is 5 but all kids are completley individual in their pace, so I guess all folks have to play it by ear :)
