I have heard that people that dont want kids are selfish and that they are not following the Bible because it says "go forth & multiply". Just wondering what other people thought about this.

I think people that don't want to have children are smart.
-They cost alot of money.
-This is a very dangerous world - its not safe for them to even practice writing thier name on the sidewalks!
-And... the teenage years.. :(

As far as the bible goes... God NEVER said it was a sin to not have children. Children have been called a blessing many times in that book... but as far as I could tell no one was ever sent to hell for not having children. Just do what makes you happy and as long as your not hurting anyone -- honor the Lord and he will be very pleased with you.

What a ridiculous notion! Kids are wonderful, but not everybody's aim in life. The world would be a better place if everybody stopped for 5 minutes to consider their parenting skills before rushing into breeding.
And what is the better option? To be forced into parenthood so you're following the bible and then have an unhappy family life;
OR:
To be honest with yourself and live a life you are suited for?

So to answer your question: I think people who don't want to have kids have the right to that choice and can still have a wonderful existence - by having long nights of sleep, cash in the bank and the freedom to go on holidays at any time of the year. And you can still do plenty of good in this world without a house full of babies.

I believe that having children is an individual choice. Some people are just not meant to be parents--it does not mean that you are bad. Just a choice that you are not ready to give your life up--if that is selfish, so be it. Atleast the person is recognizing they are not ready instead of having a kid and giving it a horrible tragic life that will dement it emotionally forever. I cant answer for what the Bible says, I go to church but the above is my opinion. I see the results everyday of people who have children and are not ready (or frankly should never have reproduced). I see physical abuse, sexual abuse, meth labs in home, parents who are terrible. I have actually heard people say they want another baby so they can can get more money every month from the government. I see so much pain and despair on the kids faces when they know their parents dont want them. It is truly heart wrenching. I am just saying until you know you are ready-use birth control. Many may say that is sinful also--cant answer that, I dont claim to know the exact interpretation of the Bible.

First off the bible means nothing in the real world, its a reference book for the weak. Selfish? Its actually just the opposite. Its the people having multiple children that are being selfish. So many children need to be adopted its almost sick, when couples decide to have 3 or more kids I have to wonder how selfish and stupid are they? Just because a woman can get pregnant does not mean she has to. I know a married couple who dont want kids because they consider it cruel to bring a new life into such a rotten world. They ended up saving tons of money and eventually adopted, real saints. The world is overpopulated, this country is overpopulated, the saying go forth and multiply is just ridiculous and means nothing. Adoption is the most unselfish act someone can perform. Having multiple children just for the sake of having children is a very selfish act.

I don't have kids and don't want kids. I don't think that I am selfish at all. My sister ( a single mom) had a son and she is not able to support him financially or emotionally. Since I don't have children, I have free time to help with my nephew and my aging parents. I also have extra money to assist any family members in need.

It's their own decision. It is so much better to not have kids if you can't be a good parent then to bring them into this world and resent them and not be able to give them what they need.

Besides, the bible says a lot of things that we shouldn't take literally. The world would be a much better place if people only had children when they were certain they could be good parents and were financially stable.

It's more selfish to have kids when you are not financially or mentally able to take care of them. We chose not to have kids because my husband has a defect that will be passed on to the kids and we don't want to bring a kid into the world that has to deal with that and be tortured for it throughout childhood. That's not selfish. Plus, I hate the little brats. JK!should I have kids if I don't feel I can properly take care of them? NO! Plus a medical condition prevents it, I find out later.

Having children just because it is in the bible is wrong. Those people who do not want children and experience that kind of joy because of their needs being put on the back burner have to be selfish and in that specific case it is the best thing. A parent who is resentful of a child because they need so much physically and emotionally is not going to be a good parent.

Let them go forth and use great protection!

I am one of those people, I thought it more healthy/wise to not have a child, if I believed I was not able to raise it properly. Consider the examples of the failures to do so. Consider the world, even though a parent may have done their best, the world influences can change the good you may have accomplished in a blink. Consider the drugs we pump into kids today, to chemically alter what before this time was dealt with differently. Consider the suicide rate of childern, I have a stepson who is resting.

Not only can I multiply, but I can add, subtract and divide, too.

People who choose to be child-free should be applauded for making a thoughtful decision on the matter, rather than going forth without a plan.

As far as the bible is concerned, there are MANY people within in the pages that were doing as God commanded and yet did so child-free.

Jesus, for example...
