Dogs are pack animals and are used to eating with their pack. This could be the reason. Or, she could be mildly stressed that you are gone. My dog rarely eats if I'm not home, even if my roommate is, though my roomie's dog will eat as long as either of us is there. We don't leave food out all of the time (not really a great practice for most dogs) so I don't know if he would eat during the day if no one was home.

Yes I do know why. When the 'packleader' is away the canine is no longer able to have an immediate and constant influx of the pheromones that each of us eminate with each and every thoughtand emotion,... Dogs key into trhis being able to scent discriminate one part urine in 300 billion parts water,...that means you can wash your underwear and enough of you is still on them for your dog to know whos they are. The lack of eating is due to the anxiety of being separated from the pack leader,... albeit a niominal anxiety it is still anxiety. Any further behaviour beyond that would be chewing or barking or scratching as nervous tension release mechanizms. The most devestating thingto ever hapen to any canine is to be exiled from its pack,.... Dogs do not survive well alone or on their own... they lead short tragic lives when abandoned.

Yep..they want it to be social hour and had rather have company. I don't even leave food out during the day anymore..just treats before I go and then we make it a production when I come home as part of the routine day. Especially since yours was a rescue she just probably wants the attention. Thank you for rescuing! Good Luck!

It's a form of separation anxiety. Anxious dogs often will not eat. Of course she may not be hungry til you get home ;-)

It has nothing to do with who the dog sees as being alpha, geesshh....what a bunch of rubbish.

You shouldnt leave food out all day..it makes dogs lose interest in eating and if they get any health problems down the road trying to get them to eat is even more difficult.

Sometimes dogs do things like that to get revenge for being left alone. It sounds silly, but whenever we left my dog at a kennel while on vacation she would refuse to eat. If we left her home alone for any length of time she would leave ripped up tissues near the door.

separation anxiety -- she is missing you.
My cat just lays around the house and the minute I walk in the door, she acts almost like a dog getting all excited that I am home. It is funny as I have never had a cat that reacts that way before.

None of my dogs do either. They sleep all day long and then tend to eat in the evening. I wouldn't worry about it as long as she is eating.

You been looking in my yard?? haha
My baby has always done that, I just racked it up to her being lonely and not wanting to eat alone. I don't like eating alone.
