How do you digitally watermark a photo?

I want to put one of my photos on a website and it said it was a good idea to digitally watermark your photo. What is this and how do I do it?

You can make your own in Photoshop, rather than paying for Digimarc. Superimpose text or an image on your photo (this will create layers), then lower the opacity on the text/image, then flatten. This is your watermark.

Use the picture as a coaster for a while. Not too long though, it will end up as more of a water stain than a water mark. I'm just sayin...
