My office co-worker either talks to herself, clicks her tongue, or whistles. It never goes beyond 2 or 3 minutes of peace and quiet unless she's away from her desk. What is the polite way to have her stop?

Amanda: One time we were in a meeting and she muttered (to herself?) that she forgot to bring her pen. And then she called herself an idiot. I felt bad, but I've been dealing with this for a while so I asked, "Sorry?" Implying that we were having a conversation. She repeated herself, but she doesn't seem to get the hint. I think she may have low self-esteem. I want to help her but also have some peace and quiet.

I suspect she doesn't realize that she's doing it. I sure don't.
One time I was walking down the hallway near my office, and a person who had an office on that same hallway said, "You're not singing today." It was then that I realized that I must have been singing to myself basically every other time that I had walked down that hallway, or at least so often that it was noticeable to her when I wasn't singing. I'm guessing your coworker doesn't realize that she talks to herself. If it interferes with your work, you might just want to gently mention it to her. I suspect that just bringing it to her attention might help to stop it.

If you're on friendly terms with her, make a joke about it. Perhaps its not something she realized about herself. Sometimes we don't realize our own bad habits unless someone else calls attention to them!

Tell her that you find it distracting when she makes "weird" sounds.
Or, ask her who she is talking to.
This will make her self conscious and hopefully, make her stop.
