I start introducing groul at about 4 weeks. When they start getting teeth. Once I know they can eat I separate mom and babies so they eat their food and then after eating mush I let them nurse to fillup their bellies with momma milk. Once they can eat hard food I will not force mom to be with them.

The earliest puppies should leave their liter maters and mother is 8 weeks, 12 weeks is best for small breed pups. The mom will start weening the puppies off when they are ready usually around 4 weeks old. Once that happens you can soak puppy kibble in water and make a mush out of it for them to eat. They can also start drinking out of a water dish. If your grandparents want to feed brand name kibble that's fine, just make sure it's high quality. a home made raw diet is the best thing for them though.

The mom doesn't need to literally be with them while they are eating, if they are eating puppy food now. As a mama dog starts to wean her puppies, she will allow them less and less time nursing - until she just decides she's totally done with it completely. At that point, the puppies may still try to nurse and she'll usually get up and walk away...sometimes with the puppies still trying to attach to a nipple! (I've seen it happen!)
However, the puppies still need to stay with her in general and let her care for them even if they are eating puppy food. She needs to completely wean them and get them prepared to move into the next stage of their lives.

I seperate the mom while the pups are eating so she doesn't eat their food. You can leave her with the pups the rest of the time. She is starting to cut back on when and how long they should nurse. That is normal. The pups will eat more and more food and nurse less and less. I let my mamas wean their pups when they want to.

She doesn't need to physically be there while they are eating their dry food.
But, mom still needs to be around. They'll learn behaviors, boundaries, grooming, and even still be nursing a little at this point.
Be sure mom gets fixed as soon as she's strong enough again.

They are usually still doing SOME nursing. She is also teaching them TONS of things. They should continue to be together until the puppies are placed.

I let the mother decide how much time to spend with the pups. She still has valuable lessons to teach them.
