Well that really depends on how much money you have to spend.
The number one belly-buster is walking/running. A treadmill would be good for that. I have mine set up in the basement with a TV right in front of it. Instead of watching TV on the couch, I walk and watch!
Also, drink a lot of water. Water flushes out a lot of bad "stuff", plus keeps your skin looking pretty.
Sit ups are good, but not just the generic sit ups. Try doing leg lifts using your hips.
I would recommend buying a good fitness magazine, like Shape, to help you out. They give good fitness ideas. Or, like another poster stated, buy some exercise VHS/DVDs.
Whatever you do...have fun! Don't be so hard on yourself. It will take some time. :-)

Step 1: Get a skipping rope.
Step 2: Start skipping, do it for 10 minutes.
Step 3: Well done, you've just burned 100 calories!
Yeah, it's really quite simple. For more fun get a hula hoop, or if you can afford to, get some home gym equipment, such as a cycling machine.

Lie down on your back, with something to support you at top (like chair legs or something) make sure this support don't move too easily, if you have a friend or partner hold onto their ankles. It is good if you have another person but if not go back to chair legs. Lift your legs up and throw them down but don't let them touch the floor. if you have a partner they will be the ones to throw your legs down. do 5 of them to begin with, and up the dosage in a couple of days. You will feel it and won't be able to slouch!
