Okay. What would YOU do if you went over to your girlfriend's house (still in college so she lives at home) and you saw her father physically harm (i.e. punch, push hard) on her? Would you step in, and stop it and risk her father not liking you anymore? To make matters worse, what do you do if her father is a police officer?

Wow, that is a tough one... You have some good answers though. As future cop you have to do what is right. You have to report that. If you saw your partner dealing drugs... You gotta report it. It's not easy and you will have to live with the decision you ultimatly make, but he did it to himself. If anything it should show this father that you care about his daughter. You didn't make him hit her, he acted completly on his own and he'll have to live with the consequences of that. This is a good expierence because this sounds like it has been an on going problem and it needs to be solved. Do the right thing. For your own morals and for the safety of your girl. Plus, the dad needs help. You know how to get ahold of me. Good luck bro!

Well, this is most likely not the first time this has happened, so you can assume that your girlfriend doesn't want anyone to know. And even if it is the first time it's happened, the fact that she didn't file a report says something. She may be justifying her father's actions in her head, or she may just be denying it as a defense mechanism.
What you need to do is get proof that it is happening, let your girlfriend know that you know what is happening and that it is wrong. Support her 100%, but if she says she doesn't want to report it, let her know that you have to - even if her father is a police officer. Right and wrong don't play favorites. Once you do this, go to the police and let them know what is happening. Let them know you have proof. This is really all you can do.
Hope I could help...

Well, as I understand the law it is your duty to call the cops, despite his occupation. Clearly you don't like him (nor should his daughter), I don't see the point in worrying about his approval. Yes, this might cause some 'trouble' for your GF, but at the same time the emotional stress of having an abusive father is generally worse.
If you are looking for legal council on how to handle the matter, I would suggest contacting a lawyer.

Talk to your girlfriend and see what she wants done. You could be a witness if she calls the police, however if you step in you might get the beating of your life and still no have accomplished anything. She might be too scared to do anything, you helping without her consent might do more damage. You can't help people who don't want to be helped. Hopefully she will be on your side and can straighten this guy out. Good luck.

This may not be right but it's what I'd do in any situation where a man is hitting, pushing, etc. a woman. I'd step in and kick his butt so he'd know what it's like. I may get my butt kicked ( not a first) or he may not like me afterwards (wahhhh) or the woman may not like me afterwards (again Wahhh), or I might even get shot and killed. In my heart I would know I'd done the right thing. In Heaven I might be known as a hero, in Hell I might be known as a bad a**. Could be promoted to Sargent at Arms for the devil.

Well statistically there is a high rate of domestic violence with in the law enforcement community so that is not completley suprizing. but you need to do the moral and legal thing and that is to call the police. Domestic calls are one of not the most dangerous calls a cop can be on and you being a civilian it would not be safe for you to step in. Call 911 and let them handle it. Who cares if he likes you he is beating his own daughter, obviously not a good person and i wouldn't give a rats azz what he thought about me.

stay out of it. you can't help her if you are in jail , have a criminal record. consider placing an anonymous call to Child Protective Agency or mention it to your own physician. mention the matter to a school guidance counselor. keep yourself out of the matter and do not tell her that you anonymously reported to anyone / agency.
