I feed my cat wet food mixed with dry food and I have been just sticking the open wet can in my fridge and I can't deal with the smell anymore.

I've tried putting it in bags/and it's just not practical. Help?

When I open a can of cat food I put any not eaten then in a pyrex dish. If the food is eaten within a twelve-hour period it does not have to be refrigerated. I put some plastic wrap over the dish so the food doesn't dry out.

I get really upset when I hear about "disposable" containers. Disposable where - out into our environment? You can have a glass dish for a lifetime if you don't break it, you just have to wash it.

I have a several suggestions for you.
1. smaller sized cans (so you can feed the whole can at once
2. plastic top for the catfood can - they sell these at the pet store and they come in all kinds of sizes. I've found these plastic tops take care of the problem.
3. put the catfood and can in a container you can seal, like a tupperware bowl (or put the leftover wet catfood in the seal-able container and throw out the can-- rinse out the can before you throw it out though, or else you'll have stinky catfood funkin' up your trash can.
4. Arm & Hammer Baking Soda - this just generally makes the whole fridge smell better, but would definitely help soak up some of the funk for you.

Our cats only get canned Science Diet, for awhile we did the plastic lid thing which was fine until we moved, lost it and have been unable to find another one that fit the cans right.

This was easily solved by getting one of those safety can openers (mine was 10 bucks at Wal Mart). You know, the ones that cut from the side and don't create a sharp edge.

Now we just use that (we don't use the pull tabs on the tops of the cans) and use the top of the can as a lid for the can (it fits perfectly) and we don't have any problems. This also allows for easier extraction of the food from the can (you don't have to dig it out from under the lip created by the pull tab top anymore).

To give you an idea of what I'm talking about:

Try this. You will love it, I'm sure!

Not sure if you ever heard of this, but I read somewhere that it food reacts badly when left in a can that are unsealed or left uncovered and then eaten at a later date. I don't remember exactly what the article said, but I do remember it saying that leaving any kind of food in cans, then putting it in the fridge makes food unsafe to eat. I don't think this article was referring to cat or dog food though.
Anytime I had cans of cat food leftover, I just put one a lid that they had available in the canned food section over the cat's food, along with a fresh box of baking soda, and everything seemed to be fine. This may just apply to reactions that some
people have to eating something leftover in a can and not put into a bowl and sealed up. Your cat is probably not going to want cold food, so you might want to let it come to room temp for about 20 minutes before you mix it with their dry food. It will probably taste better if the food is not super cold and it will mix better with the dry food. My kitties would never touch cold cat food, but if it was left out for about 15 or 20 minutes to come closer to room temp, they were fine. But my fridge got super cold. I just thought I had finicky cats though. I know that I've found several different sizes of cat food cans when I'm at PetsMart in the wet cat food aisle, depending on what size can of food you are feeding your cat. One other thing, if you feed your cat too much wet tuna cat food or even if you ever feed them human canned tuna, it will shorten their life span because it adversely affects their kidneys and it can cause the cat's kidneys to shut down to where they die. Just be careful what flavor you feed your baby and try to stay away from just plain tuna flavored cat food, if you want your cat to live a long, healthy, happy life!
These are words of advice right out of our dogs and cats Veterinarian's mouth of over twenty years, I promise you.

sounds sorta like the problem I had, and I just stopped putting out wet food. Once in a blue moon I will open a can, serve part in a separate dish one day, and part in a separate dish the second day and throw out any they don't eat.

Do NOT MIX wet and dry. Wet food can go bad in the cat's dish, and then you have to throw out the dry food since it's contaminated.

Put baking soda in your fridge. It should get the smell out. Also, you can stick the food in a plastic gladware container, and as long as your cat will be eating the food by tomorrow, you wouldn't have to store it in your fridge.

Buy lids to put on the can. That's a very good idea anyway since you're not using it all up at one time, and it will seal in the odor. You can find these in the pet food aisle at the grocery store.

Many stores sell lids for cans of pet food. They're easy to just stick on the can, and they usually only require a quick rinse to clean them. They seem to hold in funky pet food smells pretty well.

Most pet supply stores like petsmart and petsupermarket and even discount stores sell plastic lids for dog/cat food cans so you can keep it in the fridge without it stinking.. They aren't expensive and they are reuseable....OR put any leftovers in a plastic sealed container like an old butter dish or tupperware

Good luck

They make dishwasher-safe plastic lids that are just the size for cans of cat food. Try Petsmart or Petco.
