No, fleas and ticks are not the same thing. Ticks are large and grey or brown, and stay fixed in one place while they feed.
Fleas are tiny (about this big - ) and black/dark reddish brown. If you're not treating your dog for fleas it's very likely he has them, as they are very prolific feeders and breeders - a female flea will lay up to 50 eggs a day, which will hatch out in your home.
Here is a closeup of fleas: http://www.extension.umn.edu/yardandgarden/YGLNews/images/fleas.jpg
But more importantly, this is what flea dirts (poos) look like: http://www.darwinvets.com/images/flea_faeces_hi_res.jpg
If you're searching your dog for fleas, look for these flea dirts, as they are more easily found - if you put them on wet kitchen towel, they will turn red as they are digested blood.
If you need to flea treat your dog, do make sure it's flea treatment from a vets, like Frontline, because pet store flea treatments do not work.

Ticks are reddish brown in color and can hide really well on some dogs, since they are small. Fleas usually prefer the tail area on dogs and the face area on cats, although the can be found anywhere on the body. Combing the hair back, watching the stomach area, or giving a bath and looking for the water to turn reddish or seeing the dead fleas may help you decide if that is the problem. More than likely it's allergies. Just like us they can be allergic to anything. A food formulated for skin care of omega 3 supplements can help. If the problem is year round, allergy testing or antihistimines may be recommended by your veterinarian.

in certainty, you get what you pay for! in spite of the certainty that very costly, I even have used frontline plus for my canines finished existence. He has by no skill had fleas or ticks ... even at situations while my acquaintances commented to me "Boy, have not the ticks be undesirable this three hundred and sixty 5 days?" ... I hadn't considered ONE! as with all drug, there's a possiblity that your dogs would be allergic to it. So, study the classes (save on with the dosage/age suggestions). And verify to canines pores and skin for signs and warning signs of allergic reaction once you prepare it the 1st time. in case you spot a reaction, talk on your vet, and attempt a distinctive (powerful = costly) one. with the help of ways, frontline plus kills fleas, flea eggs and all ticks. I stay in North East us of a, and there is an exceedingly extreme prevalence of lyme disease ... and my vet strongly counseled using frontline plus or Advantix to thoroughly protects my dogs from ticks. (additionally, not all flea and tick drugs are able to kill each and every thing .. like frontline and advantix)

Fleas are very small compared to ticks. Also, it sounds like your dog has an allergy. They usually dont scratch everywhere when they have fleas. So, maybe he is allergic to the bedding. I would change his diet (gradually) and if that doesn't stop it, take him to the vet.

In actual fact, you get what you pay for! Although very high-priced, i have used frontline plus for my puppies whole lifestyles. He has certainly not had fleas or ticks ... Even from time to time when my neighbors commented to me "Boy, haven't the ticks be terrible this yr?" ... I hadn't seen ONE! As with all drug, there's a possiblity that your dog will likely be allergic to it. So, learn the recommendations (comply with the dosage/age ideas). And assess to puppies dermis for signs of allergic reaction after you practice it the primary time. For those who realize a reaction, speak to your vet, and check out one more (mighty = luxurious) one. By the way, frontline plus kills fleas, flea eggs and all ticks. I are living in North East u.S.A., and there's a very excessive incidence of lyme sickness ... And my vet strongly endorsed using frontline plus or Advantix to entirely protects my dog from ticks. (additionally, now not all flea and tick medicines are capable to kill the whole lot .. Like frontline and advantix)

You can see fleas as well. They are small, but can be seen. If you have light colored bedding for him, you can see them. Usually they will only itch a certain area for fleas. Next time he goes #2, check he fecal, if you see a white tape worm, he has fleas. Get him treated ASAP!
Good Luck.
