I have taken "risperdal". (risperidone) for over 10 years. I take it for its anti=psychotic effect which is what it was designed for. It seems to work moderately as I haven't had a "voice" hallucination since I began taking it although I probably have had visual (poltergeist like0 hallucinations.

No medication is a "silver bullet" which will magically "kill" all symptoms of a disorder. You have to first recognize you are abnormal and admit there is something wrong with you. Depending on the disorder it takes a will on the part of the patient to change habits of behavior and thinking and possibly psychotherapy to help accomplish this.

I would suggest looking up the descriptions of the disorders suspected like "bi-polar," Schizophrenia," "depression," "anger management," "anxiety" in Yahoo! web search to get an idea of the symptoms and treatments for each. It won't do your son much good to have you informed if he doesn't know what the cause, symptoms and treatments are so keep him informed of what you find. You can also look up the medication in question by typing "risperdal" into Yahoo! web search. By the time you finish all this you will be as informed as your doctor.

Better to just consult with your prescribing physician and trust him/her.

Good luck with your research, good mental health for your son, peace and Love!

It's got a lot of uses from bipolar to ADD/ADHD to schizophrenia to psychosis. If your son is having a lot of mood swings, it will work as a mood stabilizer. Just like Neurontin is a medication for nerve pain, but also works as a mood stabilizer or how Brethine is an asthma medication but it also stops pre-term labor. There's a lot of medications out there that are being used for off-label use and for your son, it will work well.
