for example: if i want to do pushups solely for muscle size, would it be better to
a) do as many push ups as i can for as long as i can all in a row
b) do as many pushups as i can in under 10 seconds, rest, and repeat
or c) some other way?

C) push ups are incredibly inefficent for muscle mass, they tone and cut your muscles but do little to build on them.

Low weight high reps builds deffinition and tone

high weight low reps builds bulk and single effort strength.

high reps being anything over 10 when you max. Which I'm hoping you qualify for in your pushups.

There's a reason why people use weights, it's much faster and better.

bech press, squat, dead lift, and pull-ups are great for size not push-ups
