sorry for leaving out a word but most of you seemed to understand the question anyway. the question is how MUCH would you pay for a child's karate lessons per month?

Sorry, but you are getting ripped off. There is no way that a legitimate school would charge you $50 for graduation every two months. That school is making you pay a lot of money for belts that are basically meaningless. Most kids can't learn enough to advance a belt faster than 6-8 months. It's just not possible unless your child is a prodigy. And maybe he is, but it sounds like this is a set rate that everybody pays. Plus a contract!!! They just want your $$$, they don't care if your kid learns anything or not.

My son is in tae kwon do, and he goes to a small school but they are GREAT teachers. We pay $45 a month and he can go to as many classes as we have time to take him to - 2 or 3 a week, even. They do testing every 2 months, but a student has to be invited to test, and they won't do that unless they're really sure the kid's ready and will succeed. And then we pay $10 for the belt. That's pretty much all it costs the teachers (shipping and what not) -- think of the mark-up you are paying at your kid's place!

Let your fingers do the walking -- start calling all the schools in your area until you find one that is serious about teaching kids martial arts. Biggest warning sign is the timetable for belts -- if they are making you pay $XX every X months for new belts, that more than likely means they aren't teaching, they're just cashing your checks. Also, look around for karate competitions. Find out who the winners are and where THEY study. That will tell you where people are REALLY teaching.

Hi!
I pay $50 a month, no other fees. My son is also five years old and he can go up to three times a week in his age group class. I only take him once, occasionally twice a week. What are the graduation fees for? I would have to buy the new belt when he moves up a color, but I only go month to month on when he is going to attend.

that sounds normal, thats about what it was when we checked into it, alot of places charged a lil more. try your local ymca. they have many programs. i know our offers karate and for non-members its like 70$ flat. also if you are considered low income you can get up to over half of that amount cut out.

Sounds normal. I paid about half that for my kids about 20 years ago.
