She has a fish and a hamster, now she wants a dog. Other than labs and retrievers, what would be a good dog? No toy breeds please. The smallest I'll go for is a Yorkie; the largest is a Rottweiler. I don't care if it's a mutt or a purebred.

Do you feel like taking care of the pup? Cuz if not it's a bad idea. A four year old will not remember what the puppy needs. But if you don't mind. It's a great idea! Dogs make great pets and friends to children. Also, they can make a child more active by having to be walked.

puppy is a good and a bad idea...
good because your child and the puppy will grow up together,
bad because you finish potty training you daughter not too long ago and now you'll have to train another type of animal all together... and besides that the breed of the dog too... it will grow up and maybe one day when your Lil girl and the dog are playing the dog gets too ruff with her.
My suggestion is that if you do get her a dog get a year old beagle. it's a hunter and doesn't get too big... in fact they are fairly small dogs and very lovable.
Basset hounds also would be a good choice for a young child.
I would not get a dog that is older the one 1/2 to maybe two years... less likely to have a history of abuse and turn if patted on the head wrong.

I would really try to stay away for the retrieves, labs and other large breeds.

Good luck

Well, if you're willing to sign up for the feeding and care for several years, I think it's a great idea. Wonderful bonding for your child and good way to teach personal responsibility.
I suggest one of the herding breeds or a retreiver, and probably a female.
My experience with mixed breeds is that they tend to be more even tempered (unless they've been terribly abused). We have a rescue dog now, Aussie mix, and he's a loveable oaf.

It doesn't matter as much for her as it does for you. We got our dog when my kids were 3 and 1. We got him with the kids in mind but we knew it would be work. Now 2 years later, everything is much better and the kids love the dog and vice-versa. He's become part of the family. By the way go for a lab mix!

You get a pet when she is old enough to take care of it.
Does she feed the fish/hamster? Does she clean the cage/tank?
If not, then they are your pets, not hers.
Four is too young.

Best Breed is a Schnauzer....not too small and not too big...and they are easy to take care of since you will be doing 95% of its care.

Labs are great for kids, and is nice that he has taken such an interest in animals.
