Actually dogs do NOT "hate cats so much".
It's easy to teach them to be friends, but it is easiest to do when they are little. You just have to hold them and keep them calm by making sure they know they are safe when you introduce them.
Mostly, dogs like to chase as part of their play. When the cat knows this is just play, the cat plays the game but the dog doesn't chase it as often when they are buddies.
You can teach an older cat to like a new pup, or an older dog to like a new kitten, but it just takes a bit more time.
Wild cats were taught by their mothers to fear dogs since they can be injured or killed by a dog.
Animals that are in the same family can easily become friends, and then they don't fear each other. It's fear that generates the dislike.

My dog loves cats! She would love to play with them. Unfortunately she'll start her favorite game of 'chase' but when she spins around to have the cats take a turn chasing her, she gets confused why they keep running and hide under the bed. It's very sad.
One of my mom's cats took a swipe at her (nailed her good, too. I was out of the room so I couldn't see it. We kept them separate after that) and now she's a bit afraid of all cats. Then again most of my mom's cats have a few pounds on her (she's a small dog- 15lbs). Zoie gets to visit the cats at Christmas.
She loves kittens especially and is very good with things smaller than her. She turns her head away like she doesn't want to scare it and will roll on her back to be submissive/not scary if you hold a kitten near her. Once in a blue moon she'll meet a kitten that isn't scared of her and she's in heaven, just shaking with joy she gets to sit by a kitten. It's adorable.
So not all dogs hate cats.
Some dogs see cats as "small fast moving thing" (ie prey). It's just the hunt instinct.

Do they? I`ve got 2 staffies and a cat, they`re all cuddled up in the dog bed right now. The cat occasionally takes a swipe at one of the dogs, tho!.
I had the cat first, the dogs love him. They really don`t care about other cats outside, either.

dogs dont really hate cats. It is an Instinct telling them to chase down and kill for food. They will do the same thing with pretty much all small animals.

they don't all hate each other - it depends on how they were raised. We've had both in the house at the same time, and they got along great. If a puppy and a kitten grow up together, they will be the best of friends. If you have one as an adult and bring the other into the house, the original pet may feel threatened by the new arrival and feel the need to protect their turf.

I wouldn't say that all dogs hate them. It may just be a misconception. There are many examples of dogs and cats getting along in a household.

dogs chasing cats etc. is a stereotype and not all dogs are like that. some dogs are scared of cats!
in fact, when you get a puppy the cat often hisses first so it varies from animal to animal!
hope this helps!

It's the prey drive. If it runs you chase it. Left overs from the primitive instinct. Dogs and cats can get along.
