Hello,
I doubt it. I knew three Jesuits in the 70's, a teaching order of priests; one teaches calculus in university, another is an astrophysicist and the third has a PHD in physics and did a lot of work on semi - conductors in the 70's. So you can see avoiding advanced math was not on the rosters for them.
That said, I was not very good in advanced maths and found them very tedious to learn. If I die in sin and get sent below my eternal punishment shall not be a lake of fire and brimstone with demons jabbing at me with hot pitch forks... no, too easy. Hell for me will be an eternal calculus class with a thick accented Asian professor!

I never felt I had the capacity to understand it, yet I worked as an actuary for 17 years and never messed up one case. Also, my manager who was qualified in Math, did not follow how I could remember all those numerical functions and methods and get my calculations right without a certificate. Frankly, I don't either!
Ironically, he depended on me to do his.
My son is a whiz. He befuddles me with the working of his mind and Math is his favorite subject.
We both are Christians!

No it's because it's not something I actually use in my life.
When was the last time you actually used advanced math in your career or personal life?
And by the way balancing your check book is not advanced math it's basic math.
I guess if your a politician you would use advanced math so you could tell people that we have a 9 trillion dollar deficet instead of the 100 trillon dollar deficet we really have.
Come to think of it thats not advanced math thats just using your liberal arts degree.
I'm failing to see how this is an insult even though I know from the tone of the question it was meant as one.

Not because of sin, do I avoid advanced mathematics...I would love to learn it.
For some reason, I simply cannot get past a certain point in Algebra. Believe me, I have tried.
It used to be my best subject.

You know, Pope John Paul II attended the Jagiellonian University in Kraków, and was an athlete, actor and playwright. He learned over 15 languages during his lifetime, including Latin, Ukrainian, Greek, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian, German, English other than his native Polish. He was a scholar in Theology, History, Philosophy and the arts. He was also the author of many books, encyclicals and other pastoral documents and papers.
Do you wish to put your resume up against this one? Where do YOU work, at the AM/PM, with your GED?
I hope this lays to rest the idea that men of faith are somehow uneducated.
