It's still too early to tell. They often put them on life support so that it's less work that the body has to do and it can focus more on healing. There's no way to tell if he can make it through until after the brain swelling has gone down which can take a good week. Then they can test for brain damage and brain death. Unfortunately it's going to be a waiting game for a few days.

My brother has traumatic brain injury from a crash two years ago, drunk driving, he was the passenger, suv rolled eight times with my brother IN the windshield. He was pronounced dead at the scene, revived, in ICU for 9 months, rehab for 5 months. He's about 80% back to his old self but really, he's not the same person by a long shot. His brain swelled and about three days after the crash he had more brain swelling. They didn't give him much hope, but he was only 29 at the time and very healthy. Docs can't tell you the outcome, only time will tell. I can tell you IF he pulls through he has many years of rehab ahead of him and he won't likely be the same person you once knew. I wish you and your family the best.

No one, not even the drs can answer this question. Nor can they tell you what he will be like if he does pull through. Everyone has a horror story. I have a story of hope for you. My son-in-law was involved in a motorcycle accident & he wasn't wearing a helmet. A truck turned in front of him and he ran into the truck. He had frontal lobe injuries (the part of the brain that control impulses & determines personality), had multiple skull fractures, and a broken neck. He was on life support and had severe brain swelling. He had a hole drilled in his head to relieve the pressure so that it wouldn't kill him. He was in ICU in a drug induced coma for a week to try to control the pressure around his brain. The neurologist told the family that he expected my son-in-law to walk out of the hospital but he would never be the same. Three years later, he isn't the same. He has lost his sense of smell. That's it. One mth of rehab after 3 wks in the hospital. Initially he had a lot of trouble with impulse control but as his brain healed that took care of itself. He is 99.99% his old self. He just can't smell anything. Never give up hope. There is always that.

amazingly people do. My cousin fell from a climbing wall and was in a coma for a few weeks he had broken his neck and back in several places, and had severe brain swelling. It took a long time but he pulled thro.. he is now disabled from the waist down and will never walk again, but he enjoys life more now than before, I think because he appreciates his life now. All you can do is be supportive, we held parties at the hospital for his birthday and even took him clubbing again when he was declared fit enough. We made cds of his favourite music and even stuff we knew he hated just to get him going, we made scrapbooks of everything he was missing outside the hospital even silly things like his Mum finding her purse after losing it 4 yrs before. As a result he is now living a full and happy life and has realised he has some true friends and family. I wish you all the luck in the world and dont give up on him.

Unsure. There's been 2 things like it happen round here like that. One didn't fall through then the next one did but look a while.
Having the brain swelled up is worst because it most probably leave with brain damage or something

Sorry to hear the bad news x

My thoughts are with him - a swelling in the brain resulting from trauma usually goes down, but the question is to whether or not any damage was caused as a result of the swelling / other problems from the crash.

Good luck.

Sorry to hear that, you must be devastated. There is no way of knowing, the hospital will be trying to reduce the swelling and won't be able to tell you more until, they see how he is responding to treatment. But don't lose hope, people have been know to pull through these things. Good luck i hope he pulls through, i will say a prayer for him.

After 6 months if there isn't something extra the medical doctors can do, then particular i prefer the device became off. To me being hooked as much as a device, being unable to go and talk isn't residing. i might now not be me.

Only time will tell. A lot of people make it--some don't.
