Updating your firmware will not damage your system. (i presume it might've upset something on your old system that wasn't right to start with).
I'm guessing that millions of PS3 owners (myself included) have updated with no problems whatsoever.

Also, newer games will come with firmware updates on the disc, so even if you don't download them you'll need to update your system through the disc or you wont be able to play the games.
Generally, the updates help fix problems with some games, especially when playing online, so it's beneficial to yourself to update.

Mr McCoy might be interested to know that the Wii has periodic firmware updates too.

You can check the system software version in the PS3's settings, so you can find out if the PS3 has been updated to the 2.01 version.

I updated my PS3 to the 2.01 software version without any problems, but I don't see why it would wreck you're new PS3. If your PS3 was reset or turned off while it was updating, it can damage the PS3 system, so that could have been why it wrecked your last PS3.

Probably it was a glitch with your previous PS3. I have 2.01 and many others too - it's working. I update my PS3 via PC download. After that I transfer PS3 update via thumb drive to the console.

When I crashed my car into a wall it really hurt. Should I do it again?

That was glib I, I apologise.

I think you may just have been unlucky. It would be all over the news if Sony had globally released a patch that screwed things up. Suck it and see (but be prepared to visit that shop again just in case)

I have not had any problems with my PS3(except for lack of games...yay CoD4) so its not the update that is flawed...you should be good to go with the update....

i observed one rule with my ps2-and the same goes for my ps3-i don't download ANYTHING into it-reason? well read the above question. ok sony might give you a new one in return but you don't need the hassle of going without in the meantime. my ps2 has been excellent for 7 years and my ps3 since march 23rd.

dvd player=toshiba HD-E1 high def player. (with built-in upscaler)
ps2.
so no need to download any firmware and put my expensive investment at risk.

Tut tut, no wonder the Wii has sold 6 million more units than the PS3. Simplicity is its own reward...
