Start off with who you are and it came about that you are writing to a soldier and how you got his name.
Then say thank you. What does their situation mean to you.
Then begin to tell them about your life and ask about them and their families.
Nice thing you are doing, I am sure you can follow your heart and once you begin to write other things will just come to you.

I have tons of friends in the military who are overseas, and my husband is active duty as well (but shoreside). What they always liked the most was news from home, because they don't usually get any -- tell them last nights Lakers score, or the scores of recent football games; any important national news (but nothing too serious because they have enough seriousness in their lives now) -- just keep it light and make sure they have the things that are important like photos and news clippings and sports scores.

I sent one of last week here is what I wrote.
Dear Slim, I wrote but you still ain't callin
I left my cell, my pager, and my home phone at the bottom
I sent two letters back in autumn, you must not-a got 'em
There probably was a problem at the post office or somethin
Sometimes I scribble addresses too sloppy when I jot 'em
but anyways; **** it, what's been up? Man how's your daughter?
My girlfriend's pregnant too, I'm bout to be a father
If I have a daughter, guess what I'ma call her?
I'ma name her Bonnie
I read about your Uncle Ronnie too I'm sorry
I had a friend kill himself over some ***** who didn't want him
I know you probably hear this everyday, but I'm your biggest fan
I even got the underground **** that you did with Skam
I got a room full of your posters and your pictures man
I like the **** you did with Rawkus too, that **** was fat
Anyways, I hope you get this man, hit me back,
just to chat, truly yours, your biggest fan
This is Stan

Introduce yourself. Thank him or her for whatever. Give em best wishes. Make it personal. Include a token of appreciation such as a personal drawing or something that doesn't necessarily cost a lot but is from the heart.

the guys and gals there like to know about you, your hometown, your school, your family, etc.... gives them a sense of what they're fighting for..... good news is best... the lousy news of us killing each other over here should prob be left for another day.... a little about how your heart beats faster when you see a news report about them and how sharp they look ..... thank him for his time away from home and his courage in the service of his country...... send him a hug.... ask the man at the post office for a 'flag stamp' to send it....be a little silly and stick a smiley sticker on it.....
yer a dear for what you're doing... thank YOU.....
