It's not like that where I live. Garbage is taken on Friday and recycling is taken on Tuesday. The two aren't mixed.
However, some items that are put in the recycling bin are thrown away with the trash when they get to the waste management center. My city, for instance, doesn't accept those plastic butter tubs for recycling (even though they're labeled as being recyclable) so they find their way into the trash.
I'd have to say the point of recycling is that it makes sure that at least some things don't go to complete waste. Even if half of the recycled stuff ends up in a landfill, the other half didn't, so it's still worth it. (I'm a "glass is half full" kind of person.)

If the recycled stuff ends up mixed in the same truck and is never then separated then it could not be recycled. There would be no point.
There is only a point to recycling if materials are recycled.
See http://www.wiserplanet.org/recycling.html for more information.

Maybe you should check with your garbage company. We have separate days for collection of trash and recycled goods and two different types of trucks.

Depends where you live. Some places have separate pick ups and other places actually sort through all of the trash for you. (wouldn't want THAT job...)

I don't know where you live but they definitely don't wind up in the same truck here.
