For some people, getting a gift is very important. They like the fact that the person took the time to specially select the gift and they want the other person to be aware of their needs. Doing this is a sign of emotional intimacy for them. (See Chapman's book, "The Five Love Languages", for more on this topic.) For a person like this, a gift of money would say that the person either doesn't really care that much about them, or that the person isn't as close as they thought. Caveat emptor.

Personally, I wouldn't look a gift greenback in the mouth.

I like them. My parents and grandparents give money as a gift all the time. They don't have time to go out shopping for birthday gifts or else they'd have to live at the mall. It's also nearly impossible to keep up on every changing preference of each and every family member. To keep it simple and to save time, they give money so that the recipient can buy something they know they will like. My family feels that gifts should be about making the recipient happy, not about making the one giving the gift look good.

No....but it isn't very personal...but if they need the money, that is what I would go with. If they don't really "need" the money, it would be nicer to put a little more thought into it and get them something. Personally, I am a fan of the gift card. If you know a place they love to shop, give them a gift card and tell them to pick out something that they've always wanted but could never indulge in before. Either way...its the thinking of the person that counts.

Depends on who it is from. From a peer, I would find it ackward and a little tacky. From a parent or older relative I think it is fine. I know my niece and nephew think I'm the greatest aunt in the world when I give the cash. I think my brother would find it really weird. I also wouldn't want it from my huband

I think a gift card is a better option than getting a person something they won't care for at all. If you really have NO IDEA what a person will like, gift card!

tacky shows you don't care enough to find out about the person interests or preferences
