Hoosierdaddy: It's not true that all atheists think that Christians are identical and believe in the same things. I'm an atheist, and I know that Christians have a diverse set of beliefs.

There are christians who believe in evolution. I am an atheist and would be regardless of whether or not evolution was true. You make God sound like a magical genie. The days in Genesis are literally 24 hour days. That is why people back then rested on the Sabbath because God rested on the 7th day. The bible was written by mortal men but christians choose to believe they were writing under the supervision of God. Evolution is not about how life began. It is about how the first life on earth evolved into all the different life forms you see today.

I can't even begin to count how many times I've heard atheists grouped together on this site.

I never get tired of that reference! It's one of my favorite terms.
In answer to your question, it is far easier to just lump everyone into a nice little group. Makes it easier to tear them down and requires little thinking.

Anyone who's not familiar with Pandas and People's history, or the Dover trial isn't going to get this one.

It makes a better case for their lie, if they can make scientists seem as unchristian as they can. It's the ad hominem approach.
