I am considering joining the Air Force after I graduate college because I am told that you are an officer right from the beginning, and there are many benefits including helping me with graduate school. I keep hearing all these good things, but I want to know the real side of it, and not from some recruiter because they are notorious for saying what I want to hear just to sign me up, it happened to an ex of mine who enlisted in the Coast Guard. Does anyone have any good information on joining and if it is a good opportunity for someone who works hard but does not know exactly what they want for a career. I will have a degree in Sociology by next fall. Thanks for the help.

Well I know you didn't want to hear from a recruiter, but I am the best source of info. First off, you have a non-technical degree. That means you competing against a ton of people. You need to have at least a 3.0 to even apply. There is only 1 non-tech board a year. They look at everything from your past. any criminal charges, drug use, dependents will be knocks against you. You also have to take the AFOQT(officer version of the ASVAB) as well as pass all the physical requirements. It is a long process, but well worth the time if you make it through. We aren't the ARMY, we have a line around the block of people who want to be officers. So remember to be humble, because your sociology degree really doesn't mean a thing to Air Force. We are taking less people every year for OTS. The Air Force is planning on getting rid of the program entirely. A good GPA and a good attitude will go long way in OTS.

You can, I believe they have a program that takes people right off the streets into the officer corps, but with a degree in sociology you will find very limited opportunities and a lot of competition. It's not as if they just take everyone who applies, you have to take a test, and the AF looks for SMART people, so you are up against everyone else academically. But the AF really needs the technical types, engineers, aeronautical types, etc.

Yes, you can if you meet the criteria, but you also can end up a corpse in a bag with Iraq being so dangerous and the US doing most of the fighting there with the Iraqi's standing around picking their noses and ***! America trains men and women in 8 weeks, the Iraqi's will not fight for their own country after being trained to do so for years! How many Americans have been killed by these same Iraqi's that claim to be on the side of us? The number is monumental! Truth is, like in Vietnam, the American troops know who the enemy is, but cannot recognize them as they all appear to be the same until its too late and someones already dead! America cannot defeat an enemy it cannot identify, no matter what the other circumstances are in that region! Get all the facts before you join and make sure this is what you want to do!

If you hold at least a BA in anything, then you are eligible for officers candidate school.
What you can do with a degree in sociology I don't really know, but no matter what, a college degree is needed to become an officer.

If you want to go in as an officer, you must have a bachelor's degree, pass all the physical/written tests, and apply for and be accepted for Officer Training School (OTS). No everyone who applies is accepted. Check the Air Force website for current info on OTS.

humorous how maximum of non AF/ AF secure practices forces answer the question, and that they get small/considerable issues incorrect. a million. secure practices Forces gets deployed, our shortest deployments at 6-months (with a month or 2 for preparation) and longest are 12-months (with a month or 2 for preparation) with the skill to boost your deployment time. 2. For secure practices clearance you will desire a physically powerful criminal checklist (extra often than not sparkling) besides as respectable economic archives (in case you have been old sufficient) yet at 18, there's no longer plenty they examine. 3. For secure practices Forces, AFSC 3POX1, you placed it on your checklist, placed it because of the fact the 1st determination, and don't placed something down, and you gets it. they are consistently searching for extra human beings, and whether you had different jobs down, your 80% guarenteed to get SF. Ask your recruiter they'll inform you. and you would be guarenteed your interest in the Air stress, the only time you chosen after problem-loose, is that in case you went in "open often used, open admin, open scientific, or the different open fields" the open ability which you're chosing a profession interior a definite field. yet it is likewise possible to be assured SF good from MEPS. 4. BMT is BMT, it extremely is extra good then maximum something you have prob accomplished, yet at comparable time once you look lower back on it, it replaced into straight forward. you will prob cry, you will laugh, you will hate it, you prob will never like it. and by utilising accident you basically do it as quickly as. Tech college, for SF is 13 weeks long (somtimes it extremely is 14-sixteen in specific circumstances a splash shorter, as they alter the circiullum each sometimes) you will learn infantry stuff, squad techniques, you will shoot a good number of weapons from the AF inventory (M240B,M249,M203,M9,M4) you will learn regulation enforcement (domestics, site visitors stops, and so on) and you will learn secure practices, (guarding a weapon storage section/flightline) 5. your settlement is 8 years. yet you are able to connect for 4 years energetic and four years inactive, or 6 years energetic and a pair of years inactive. (in the process the inactive, your in certainty out of the protection stress yet would desire to be called lower back in in case you have been mandatory. the AF has never called up it extremely is IRR as of immediately *knock on wood*)

depends on whether you are even competitive for a Commission.

for one, if you don't have a tech degree, your chances are much lower, especially with the AF. add to that your GPA and extracurricular activities, you could very easily be not a viable candidate at all for the AF.

Not everyone gets to go to Grad School on the military's dime either. and if you do, you will incur a minimum 3 more years of service.

No, it is not. Unless you are a ROTC graduate you will have to go through Officer Candidate School. You are not guaranteed to pass, if you fail then you still have to serve out your contract as enlist.

i think you have to have at least a 3.0, i remember my husbands brother asked a recruiter after he got his history degree and he only had a 2.5, so if you have over a 3.0 you can definately be an officer and your resume will be unbelievable to future employers
