Hello! My 1987 Nissan Maxima's speedometer is misbehaving. It does not always read the correct speed. It will sit at zero, slowly flutter up near the speed I am going and then slowly go back down to zero. When I accelerate it falls straight back down to zero. Sometimes letting off of the gass peddle prompts it to spring back up, sometimes not. When it sits down at zero it makes this angry click click click noise. The transmission seems to have a harder time shifting when the speedometer is misbehaving. The problem is slowly getting worse.

Sounds like your speedo cable is streched real bad or completely busted. Have it checked out at the garage but it should be alright once the cable is replaced

And if the 21 year old maxima needs a spedomoter replaced? Nissan Might not have any more new ones. Sounds like the instrument it self is acting up try resetting the trip odometer some time that binds up the cable driving the spedometer. Replace the cable only after inspecting the spedo drive gear on top of the gear box remove the 10mm bolt and pull it out of the gear box. The plastic gear can wear down. And yes the transmission uses an electrical signal from the spedo to shift properly. I hope it is something simple.

In those days, the speedo cable had a gear to where the speddo needle is attached. the teeth on that gear would wear out, and even a few would break, and the needle would start jumbing up and down, hence erratic at high speed. change the cable, and you will be fine.
good luck
