instead of hooks use a pole and put two hooks aside on the wall that way you can install them easily with no hassle.

hooks evenly spaced, good way to do this is to count up number of hooks per curtain, say for example 11 place a hook at either end then one in middle (fold curtain to find middle) then place evenly between these points. once done hand up curtain with a hook (2 hooks if heavy curtains) at one end, then hang up a hook at the other end, then start to hang rest of hooks, this way a lot of the weight is already on the rail/pole so you don't have to try and hold curtain at same time as hanging it.

Hooks before you hang - obviously. Pull each curtain gather to roughly the space of window you want before you hang them. After hanging, adjust the spacing of the gathers. More hooks is better than less.
