I was flicking around the channels and came to the God Channel. Timing was perfect as they were discussing films and half way though they came to the Golden Compass.

The general view was that it shouldn't be seen as the author was a devout atheist.

Do you feel that a film that may not go along with your beliefs should be avoided or should you be able to view other opinions if your belief is strong enough.

It will not change my Faith in God, so it does not matter whether the author is Atheists or not. Many out there in the entertainment world are Atheist or Pagan but wear sheep's clothing to keep in good graces with the public.

If your weak minded then stay away from things that may sway you, but if your strong then there should be no worries

Not only do I think the boycott is a ridiculous waste of time and energy (#1 movie in America right now). I also think it is wrong. The author of the book is an atheist and presents ideas that may be unsettling to some Christians. Still, they are ideas we need to see if we are going to make informed decisions about anything. I've studied the book in depth, and it didn't shake my faith. My 16-year-old niece read the entire trilogy and didn't even notice that the author was "trying to undermine" he belief system. She is still a devout Christian too.

It's a bunch of hubbub over nothing. What the protesters call protecting their children, I call fear mongering and thought control.

Well it wasn't a good movie. And I say this from a film maker standpoint and not a Christian standpoint. If it was three and a half hours of polar bears fighting, then I would have loved it. Those parts were sweet. From a Christian standpoint I don't mind it because it seems to be going against the church and the people of the church and not so much religion in general. The church as an institution has done nothing but harm to people and damage to religion, all while ignoring the morals it pretends to teach. The Church will destroy religion if people don't learn to personalize their faiths. After all, the "dust" stuff in that movie is pretty supernatural in itself and the movie certainly doesn't deny the existence of a soul.

it's my understanding that Pullman is an agnostic.

i just finished reading the Golden Compass and i really can't see what everyone's so upset about. it's really no different than Harry Potter on an 'good vs evil' scale.

i mean really, if you're going to call a movie 'atheist' just because it doesn't glorify god, then 99.9 percent of movies made are atheist.

i'd honestly think the next will farrell movie would be more offensive to the values christians hold dear...save your protest for something more worthy.
;)

Anyone ever read the Golden COmpass?

Someone is going to have to tell me why the focus is God and not the authors latent child love... I mean, one second Lyra is a 12 year old "little girl" or something. The next (last book) she is boinking the dude in a meadow...

WTF? She is 12. This epic didn't take years.

Does it have to be spelled out?
