The usual requirement is an upper second honours degree or better (from a proper university) to get you into the Foreign and Commonwealth Office from where you would seek a position in the Diplomatic mission. A good command of a foreign language is important (French used to be mandatory).

Usually a first class honours degree. With one party it should be The classics or Science, or Politics.
With the other it is 2nd class from a correspondence college and in underwater basket weaving.

In any form of Civil Sevice government based job like this you will need to be.

Self absorbed, self opinionated, arrogant, obnoxious and have the ability to lie through your back teeth whilst smiling nicely.

If you have those qualities - you'll do fine
