She is a ragamuffin and will soon be 12 yrs old. We adopted her when she was about 10. At first she did not demonstrate a problem with the litter box.

The problem is that she does not poop in the box.

She is now confined to the back porch and the behavior continues. The vet thinks it is behavioral. We have tried using two seperate boxes and changed litter brand. The box is far away from her food and water.

The litter is cleaned and changed regularly, nothing tramatic that I can recall when this problem began. Her original box had a lid and the two new ones are lower to the ground but dont have lids (she is a bit on the large side).

Our cat of 13 years did the same thing - we had her tested for urinaty infections, etc... everything came back normal - our Vet also told us it was behavorial. she would go in the dining room so we put a second litter box in the dining room - She used is twice and then stopped. Do you have any other pets in the house that is making her uncomfortable?? At the time we did - another cat, but they were friends for 2 years before this started. Eventually - the younger cat ran away and the problem cleared itself.

Try getting a larger litter pan or perhaps a large pan from the hardware store. Take the cover off. Sometimes cats develop an aversion because they were frightened within a closed in box. Have you changed the brand of litter? Sometimes that will caused confusion as well.

try putting a piece of her feces in the litter box and she may think this is where it belongs and will leave it there from now on. Otherwise you could try sprinkling baking soda around where you dont' want her to go and then I am told that they will use the pan. You can vacuum it up after she learns. It could take a while. She may have been outside for a while and never used a pan. Also she may be too big for the litter pan and be uncomfortable. Try a bigger one or take the lid off till she is used to using it so it appears to be bigger.

If she is always pooping in the same place, try putting down some newpaper or a puppy pad. That will m ake clean up easier. My kitty had diarrhea and now doesn't like to poop in the box. She is 16. the vet said it is hard to change these habits once they form. Since my kitty just pooped on the floor just outside the box, I laid down newspaper and just throw it out. She still pees in the box.

I wonder if she has some arthritis and has a hard time positioning in the box.
Has she been declawed? Some declawed cats find it hurts their paws moving the litter around; wetting is not such a problem cause she's not covering it anyway.
About the only solution I can think of if that is the problem would be to use cedarific, a soft sawdust product.

my thoughts would be:

when did this start?
did you move house or add/lose a family member recently?
where does she poop? is it a really bad place?
can you get her to 'go' outside or is she an indoor cat?
have you recently put a lid on your litter box? some cats dont like this.

you have my sympathy, poor old cat and poor you. hope things improve soon.

wow, i don't know, my cat has a similar problem, but it seemed to resolve on its own?? have ou tried changing foods? perhaps she is in pain when pooping, and she associates the litter box with the pain. hope this helps.

Maybe she does not like pooping in the box, from what I have seen cats are very much 'do as I want to do and not what you want me to'....but is that not some of their appeal?

My cat is previous and blind so i be responsive to the way it feels to have a cat who has issues looking the clutter container. because you have this kind of super style of cats, that's often stated to bathe the clutter container greater often and to have better than one clutter container through fact cats do not continuously prefer to share. confirm you clean all his spots the place he has earlier long previous or he could save going there.

sounds like this is a outside cat. if they will not use litter box, then they shall live outside. the cat most likely has been a outside cat before you got it.
