guy claim to be both?. For some reason this person likes to humiliate themselves on-line in this Yahoo forum. So Far this person has managed to deduce I served 18 years Army (NOT in US) and am no longer Active but a reservist, he posted this question on-line and 7 out of 7 answers told him, yes you can be retired from active and be a reservist, now is it because this person only managed to hack it for 4 years and is jealous of someone with 18 (possible it might be added to shortly) or is it because this person never left the US can not be a member of VFW because he never served in a foreign War, he feels so insignificant that he feels he has a right to email real vets and demand they prove to him their service. My only conclusion is because he must feel so insignificant that he humiliates himself so much, what do you think?

"also if you get a campaign ribbon, and EVERYONE did for Desert Storm, it's enough to get you in the VFW whether you were there or not"

Did service personnel who never left the USA get a ribbon for "Desert Storm"?? doe's that not cheapen the whole reason for having a medal, so the people who fought on the front lines get a medal which a clerk back in the USA got ? for the UK the falklands medal they distingushed the difference between actual combat and "support" if you served in the war front line you got the falkands medal with a ROSETTE on it, if you were support you just got the medal

In regards to the VFW, it used to be in the charter that member had to have fought on foreign soil to be eligible to join.
Now unless they have changed the carter just to increase membership, I can't see how awarding the campaign ribbon alone would allow membership.
I joined the VFW back in 72 but after just a few meetings and seeing how the WWII vets treated us Vietnam Vets, I as well as thousands of other Vietnam vets, have ignored the VFW for years and will still do so, especially if they are now letting anyone join!

And on a closing note, as usual there are many posting here who are nothing more than arm chair soldiers who only experience combat through their video games and they watch too many movies.

EDIT: Just checked membership eligibility for the VFW it states:
If you have received a campaign medal for overseas service; have served 30 consecutive or 60 non-consecutive days in Korea; or have ever received hostile fire or imminent danger pay, then you are eligible. Get started and join our ranks.

So the award of just a "campaign ribbon" does not qualify you for membership

particularly they do no longer seem to be. After retirement you're particularly in a sub-portion of the guy waiting Reserve. you do no longer circulate to the retired checklist until you're on the time you may have carried out 30 years provider. I retired in 1990 after 2 many years provider and went to the Fleet Marine Corp Reserve and in 2000, on the factor i might have had 30 years lively provider, I won a circulate to the retired checklist. maximum individuals only say retired after 2 many years by using fact it somewhat is seen that even nevertheless you will be involutarily observed as returned to lively duty. Technically you're in the two for a volume of time until you do 30 lively. i do no longer understand why some make a huge deal approximately it yet some do. As for working with a Reserve unit, some retirees/FMCR try this only the two help or by using fact the prefer to maintain there palms in it yet they do no longer seem to be contributors of that reserve unit and have no pay, advantages (outdoors of feeling solid and assisting out) and somewhat are unpaid volunteers giving a hand. you won't be able to be receiving a retirement verify and a Reserve or national look after verify for performing militia obligations on the same time-you're a civilian contractor working with the Reserve or NG yet you should no longer be a paid member of the NG or Reserves.

Because in the US you can be! If a reserve member serves so many years of active duty while being in the Reserves then they qualify for an active duty retirement and it starts the day they walk out the door. There are a number of reservists and quardsmen that have qualifed for this over the last few years because of the high ops tempo and being on extended active duty. I know several of these people personally and was on active duty almost the entire time from 1995 to 2006 myself and retired after serving 34 years total.

I'm a little confused... I don't have a copy of the awards regulation in front of me, but I'm almost certain that you have to be "in theater" to receive a campaign medal. A service medal, such as the current Global War on Terrorism Service Medal is given to all who serve during the qualifying period.

Thus, the person that never left Nebraska should not have received a campaign medal and should not be eligible for VFW membership.

To answer your original question, I'd suppose that the person you're referring to has a pathological need for appreciation and wants to feel important. Thus, he attempts to belittle others and puff himself up. Just my $0.02...

when you "retire" from the US Military you transfer to inactive-reserve status (not sure for how long) until you are officially retired...in 11/99 i transferred (retired) to the fleet reserve and this year 11/07 i got my official retirement notification ( i can't be recalled to active duty)...hope that makes sense

retirement (fleet reserve) in the US being at least 20 years of active duty

also if you get a campaign ribbon, and EVERYONE did for Desert Storm, it's enough to get you in the VFW whether you were there or not

http://www.jointheelite.org/index.php?option=com_eligibility&Itemid=34...you may be right about the VFW membership, but i seem to recall at the Millington, TN post that they let people join who had a NATIONAL DEFENSE SERVICE MEDAL http://www.soldiercity.com/product-exec/product_id/4369

we called it the "fire watch" medal because they gave them to everyone

I got out of Active Duty in 1982. Came back into the Reserves in 2002 because they said that I was "too old" to return to Active Duty.
And, yes, I can be a member of the VFW when I retire from the Reserves due to my Active Duty time.
