I called in a refill for my prescription yesterday for my back pain, but also let them know that I felt like I needed something strong for when the pain gets worse every once and a while. I am running low on the prescription I already have, but the nurse just has an answering machine and says it can take 48+ hrs before she gets back to you. So, do I just wait it out or can should I call the pharmacy and get them to fax over a refill request for so that I could get it refilled tonight?

My experience is that they respond to pharmacy refill requests slower than patient refill requests. If you want another pain killer you'll need to contact your doctor.

If you want a stronger pain killer, you will ahve to wait to get the script from the doctor. The pharmacy cannot increase your pain medication without a note from the doctor. If you are currently in a lot of pain, then you should go ahead and refill your prescription. If no refill is available for your script then you will have to wait for the nurse to call you back.
