In the Uk the bodie is "preped" by the mortuary tech. He makes the incision than runs from the top of the sternum down to the pubic bone. he also makes the incision across the skull for the calvarium to be performed. The pathologist then carries out the post mortem operation and once performed the body is then sewn back up by the tech again. Interesting point, the brain is never put back in the skull as it's a real pain to do it and is always placed in the chest cavity. The internal organs are usually put into a plastic bag before being put back in the body after embalming. I know cos I was there... on numerous occaisions. The role of the coroner in the UK is to conduct an inquest into a persons death, he holds a court to do this and can all witnesses. He is also responsible for buried treasure, it called treasure trove here.

Although many coroners are pathologists, not all are, so some do not perform autopsies. All medical examiners are doctors.
