When I say what my plans are(driving somewhere, buying something, changing something) he responds with "are you sure?". Even when I say 'yes', he goes on to describe a litany of things of why my plan is wrong or things I "missed". He becomes agitated if I try to explain that's not why I said it or I already thought it through. He won't stop and raises his voice to continue. He says I don't know what I'm talking about.

This frustrating mood change happens quickly and out of nowhere.

Sometimes I hear him out. Inevitably he mentions something that ticks me off but responding only makes the situation worse. He does this with my mother and sibling, too. He will take pot-shots at my mother when others are around as well.

What is going on here?!

Tell him if he isn't paying for it then he shouldn't have an opinion. Otherwise, just stop telling him these things, it is really none of his business anyway.

Your dad is feeling insecure about something. Usually men who are aging are feeling more and more useless and try to build themselves up this way. Take a look at your dad's situation and what is going on in his life and see if this isn't true. Its really hard on the male ego to be replaced by his young son or daughter.

Would it kill you to simply listen to him and thank him for his advice and then just do whatever you want to do? It doesn't have to be an argument, you could just stop competing with him to prove you are an adult.

Sounds like you Dad is insecure with himself and uses his family to make himself feel more imporant/better. Has he recently gone through some major changes or has he always been this way?

Some people have the need to always 'be right'. Let him 'be right' and avoid the hassle.

If this is something new, you might want to talk to your mom about it, she might have more insight about it and can tell you what is going on.

Ask him to be your driver. And you be the back seat driver.
