It depends on how long you've been broken up. Being friends in the months following a break up probably isn't a good idea. There was a purpose for the breakup, and you both need a little time to get back to being single. It will be hard to not have that somebody with you everyday to talk to and hang out with - but that is what has to happen in order to move on. After you've spent some time apart, I don't see anything wrong with being friends. You'll have to watch out for jealousy and lingering feelings - so refuse to talk about crushes and things of that nature - even if they use the line "that is what friends talk about". There are plenty of other topics that friends talk about besides that stuff.
A friendship with an ex can be one of the best friendships you have in the long run. There was a reason for the initial attraction - because you were meant to get to know each other. Unfortunately not everybody can handle the change to this from a relationship. You'll have to be wise and honest with yourself to know the difference.

Yeah, but it usually doesn't become a healthy friendship until quite a while after (and most guys don't really see the point in staying friends). Usually, if a guy is willing to stay "friends," he's hoping he'll be able to have sex/ relationship with you again down the road.

Were you friends with her prior? Why not after??
Some people are great friends and mediocre lovers. If friendship suits you best I say Cherish it for what it is. You already have a relationship established. Why not?

Sure, why not. What you had is over and it would be O.K. to be friends. At least you know that if you have a problem you can always consult him or her.
