The freshly printed counterfeit money will still look strange in a person's hands even if it is perfect. Money gets used over time and it gets roughed up. You have to find a way to simulate that. The method has to be quick, easy, and cheap. It can't involve fancy machines or hard to get stuff. Dryers are all over the place and poker chips are not hard to find. The money tumbles in the dryer and the poker chips help beat the money up some. The money comes out looking more natural.
It was also in the 4th Lethal Weapon movie too.

Yea, I did that one time, but I had it on 'cotton' rather than 'perm press'. It was TOO hot.
My counterfeit $20.00's shrunk....
All I got was a bunch of $5.'s
