Both mean to want. By implication, "lust" implies impurities in the nature of that which one may want. I noticed another of your questions which placed the words in a Scriptural context. Perhaps "thirst" might be a better word.

Lust ==craving, like being very, very hungry. Lust for food or anything else that you cannot get off of your mind.
Desire==want, like you want a piece of cake or something as a treat.
