Look at the second cutomer review in the link Neil N posted (scroll down about 2/3 the way down the page). The reviewer says he is using it as an optical combiner instead of an optical splitter (2 optical sources and only 1 optical input on his receiver) and that it works fine.

Sirbobx's suggestion that you might want to use an optical switch instead would probably only be an issue if you didn't want to turn off the audio source devices when they're not in use. Otherwise, I don't see why the reverse splitter wouldn't work for your purposes. Besides, the splitter is only $2. Might as well give it a try.

I dont think a splitter turned backwards will work.

Look at the optical outputs on your devices. They are all showing light that pulses very fast. If you use a "Y" adaptor - the light from one device will shine at times when the light from the second device is off. This will mess up the signal from the first device.

You want an optical switch. This makes sure your receiver only sees the light from 1 device at a time, never a mix.

MonoPrice has a $7 mechanical switch shown below. I have also seen these at some stores like Radio Shack.
