my boyfriend has had numerous addiction issues in the past - specifically alcohol, painkillers and cocaine. he has been in a twelve-step program for over a year and has been successful. however, he woke up yesterday with severe neck pain and after several hours of unsuccessful rest / moist heat / ice, he took two percocets, given to him by a family member, not a doctor. Since it is only going to be a minimal dose (family member has vowed not to give more than 3 days worth) and since it's being used to treat pain, he feels that it is acceptable. I disagree and would like some outside advice.

I agree about using other peoples drugs, this is a no brainer. Problem being he might NOT have neck pain, might be faking it just to get the drug! Therefore really he should have seen a Doc who I hope will know his medical History, given him an examination and perhaps prescribed paracetamol and bed rest.
I ran into this five years ago. Female with a personality problem was in the family home, parents on vacation. She had a chest infection so rather than seeing a Doc she went around various friends and gathered several antibiotics, which she took. By the time I saw her she was white, blue lips, fingers, having serious problems breathing. She started with a chest infection ended up with pleurisy!
She assumed all antibiotics were the same! It never dawned on her that some are for UTI, others skin, some ENT, but she took the lot, without success and it nearly killed her. Always see a Doc, never give your medication to anyone else, or take medication from other people.

Anyone who has been addicted one has a 100% chance of getting addicted again. If the pain is bad give him Tylenol or Advil but NEVER prescription pain relievers unless the doctor prescribes them. He should never take meds that belong to someone else. The "pain" issue may just be an excuse to get stronger pain relievers, I've seen that happen many times. Keep up the heat, ice, rest and maybe massage it. If it hurts so bad nothing helps take him to the doctor but NO MORE PERCOCETS or any other painkillers unless the Dr. gives them to him and be sure the Dr. know he has had many addiction issues. You'll be helping him more than you know.

seeing that he had an addiction to multiple substances, I would be very weary of him taking percocet at all. my pain doctor sais if your a smoker or ever had any other addictions that it shows one may have a addictive personality and i wouldnt of had him take the percocet. I take it myself for my lupus and other conditions, but i know they were trying to help him they could be hurting him too, knowing he use to do cocaine if a family member gave him just a little coke to relax, most likely he will go looking for it again when hes coming off it. just being honest really. your boyfrined i know worked realy hard through recovery and you would be amazed what just a couple pills do. recovered alcoholics dont just have sips of drinks here and there they have to stop all together and same goes for the percs.
I would tell your boyfriend that he shouldnt take percocet anymore and no other narcotics due to his addiction. that he worked to hard to recover and a little is how it always starts.

Drugs treat symptoms and not causes. Use ice, massage- don't cover up symptoms with drugs. Illegally obtained without a scrip mind you. It is actually black and white- transference addiction
