Hello. I'm active duty in the U.S. Army. I'll be moving in Italy next Febraury. If I bring my official order with me do I still need a passport or can I just use my Military I.D.?
Thanks!

No longer is just military ID acceptable for flights. You will be issued a No Fee Passport this is to be used for the PCS and then travel due to orders. It is done through either the TMO or Personnel Office on the base you are at. After that you are to use a regular Tourist Passport for travel, so if you don't have one, get one. It is now a requirement that a passport is necessary for returning to the US via AIR. In Summer 2008 it will be a requirement also for travelling via LAND or SEA.

If you have official orders then you will only need your orders and military ID. The SOFA passport the individual was speaking of above is only free for dependents who are command sponsored. If you are active duty then you will have to pay for your passport since your orders get you there in the first place. There are some countries in Europe that allow crossing borders with orders and ID but others do not. The sofa passport is for military use only. Usually no one has a problem using this for travel but if you get the wrong person having a bad day at the border then they can deny you with that one. If you are wanting to travel while you are stationed in Italy then I would suggest getting a regular tourist passport for that just to be safe. Contact your post's passport office or transportation they will know who to get you in contact with for further questions. Hope this helps

I am here in Italy right now, vicenza to be exact. Your not finance are you? well anyway i just got here august all you need is that i.d. when you get to the airport were people show there passport all u do is show your id and than look for someone in acu's. If your flying into venice you might possibly see a ssg berry, and than HOPEFULLY your sponsor will be there waiting for you. But its good you have a passport already because if you do go somewhere else like slojvenia or greece you will need a passport, but germany doesnt require one if you have your id.

A passport is always a good thing to have. Your military ID can get you a lot of places while traveling on military orders, but I would have a passport as well. Have fun in Italy!

Only if you have official military orders that require you to pass through canada. I had orders for alaska and the military ID worked, however if you are just travelling for individual reasons, yes you do need your passport.

You'll only need your ID and a copy of your orders. If you're married or have kids they will be given a gov't passport for the country you're stationed in only.

For easier travel to other countries in the area you need a regular passport which the gov't does not pay for.

Just military ID is needed but bring passport. I found it easier using a passport much of the time when traveling across Europe while on vacation or even during travel to TDYs/TDA's if I was getting myself there. Though occasionally the ID and travel form(forgot the exact name) worked better.

You can go to the ID department usually and get a military passport for free. Its a good idea to get a passport in case you want to travel anywhere in Europe while you're stationed in Italy, and you WILL want to travel!
