I had a really tough Christmas too, a few years ago. I just wasn't feeling one big festive but somewhere in the back of my mind, I knew a merry Christmas was what I needed to get me through it.

You know how scientists say that if you smile even when you're not happy, you will actually get happy faster!? I kinda went with that idea.

I begrudgingly put the tree up and played christmas music while I decorated it, and to be honest, found myself singing along with the carols! I shopped and wrapped presents even though I couldn't afford much and even made some christmas cookies. Most of this time, however, I just wasn't "feeling it"

But then some family members came over. They were also having a hard time for the same reason as me and we admired the tree, ate cookies and talked about favorite Christmases of our childhood... and then went to drive around and look at other people's lights on their houses.

At the end of the evening, we all felt so much better, and actually proceeded to have a good Christmas day too. I think it was even better for them than it was for me, in a way I had given them the best gift of all by starting Christmas up for them and starting new traditions so the missing old ones wouldn't leave us so empty.

I'm not saying this is what you should do, but it might help you AND your daughter to start filling those holes with happiness and new traditions. Find the optimism through the sadness and trial, even if it doesn't feel better right away, I think it will help.

I wish you the best and send comfort to your and your daughter.

I too am going through lot with my family but still try to keep my mood festive. Every day I try to look for the good things in life to minimize and and not dwell on the stinky ones. It really helps.

My festive mood has been dwindling and dwindling over the last few years. I'd like to forgo Xmas but the family makes that hard. I am not all bah-humbug about it, I'm not bitter, I just don't really care about it and hate to be bothered with the holiday annoyances.

Edit: I do love egg nog though!
