Here's another thing: If God knows all, didn't He see this coming?

No. He was greedy and jealous. I think mankind exhibits knowledge of that quite well.
The reason 1/3 of the angels were cast out with him is because greed and jealousy are like a disease that can spread easily in the heat of the moment, but remember--according to the story, that 1/3 of angels didn't leave of their own accord, they were cast out and had no choice. Lucifer was really the only one who continued to want to take God's place and harbor jealousy over the fact that humans got souls like the angels had.

Lucifer is generally considered as prominent archangel. His name means "light bearer" and was God's favorite angel (let's say "assistant"). He was motivated by pride (didn't want to serve someone who is above him), so he started rebellious revolution, "The War of Heaven" -- when it failed, Lucifer was cast out of Heaven along with 1/3 of heavenly host and came to reside on this world.
To answer your question short -- even when it's the best situation possible, there is always someone who thinks is better and wants to take over control. It happens all the time, pride, lust, greed, gluttony, you name it.

Traditional Christian theology says it was pride - they thought they should and could be in charge, but they were just fulll of themselves. Which conflicts with the traditional Christian teaching that humans were created because they have free will - obviously the angels did as well.
I would say that the whole story is a pretty piss-poor reading of passages from Isaiah and Ezekiel where they rant against the Kings of Bablyon and Tyre. I spend almost zero time thinking about Satan, Hell, or anything like that. To me these concepts are metaphorical.
Of note - L Ron Hubbard's final teaching was that God is actually evil and the battle of Armaggedon will happen and God and his people will believe they are on the right side of things, but actually it is world religion that has been the force of evil in the world and L Ron will be reincarnated as the antichrist to come save the world from God once and for all.

Satan rebelled because he came to believe he was greater than God. He gathered enough supporters to try to overthrow and take control of Heaven. Of course, he was nothing but a mite in God's eyes and was cast out of Heaven, entrusted with watching over other souls that fall from grace and choose to distance themselves from God as he did (aka hell).

Jealousy is the reason given in the story. Lucifer could no longer worship God endlessly because angels were forced to serve him while mankind was given free will and had the ability to worship God or ignore God.

He was stupid as far as Angels go. And you need to read up on why he revolted. It had nothing to do with how great Heaven was. He wanted more from God and God said no....

Ya know -- the mormons have always had the best interpretation of this story - at least the one that has made the most sense to me.

Great question!! I think the pope's head must be overloading right now.. I know one thing - the church goers are awfully closed minded to even consider this question. It's their way or the highway..
