The Bible says that when Jesus comes again, every eye will see and every ear will hear...
How do we know the end is near? What things are we to look for?
Many passages of Scripture tell us. Here is a summary of a few of them:
- "many will come in My name, saying, 'I am He,' and, 'The time has drawn near." (Luke 21:8 & Mat 24:5)
- "when you hear of wars and commotions, do not be terrified; for these things must come to pass first, but the end will not come immediately." (Luke 21:9 & Mat 24:6)
- "Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom." (Luke 21:10 & Mar 13:8)
- "there will be great earthquakes in various places, and famines and pestilences; and there will be fearful sights and great signs from heaven." (Luke 21:11 & Mat 24:7)
- "Men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God."
(2Ti 3:2-4)
- "Let not anyone deceive you by any means. For that Day shall not come unless there first comes a falling away, and the man of sin shall be revealed, the son of perdition, who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God, or that is worshiped, so that he sits as God in the temple of God, setting himself forth, that he is God. "
(2Th 2:3-4, Mat 24:15, & Dan 9:27)

In the book of Revelation there are a series of events which must take place before His return. Some people believe that some of them have already taken place, or are in the process of happening. Either way, it's best to be prepared, because whether you are anxious for it to happen, are dreading it, or don't even believe that it's going to happen, it IS going to take place. It will be a joyous time for believers, but for those that choose not to believe, the Bible says it will not be a pleasant place or time. It talks of unbelievers crying out for the rocks to fall on them, and of "weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth". Doesn't sound like fun to me. Read the book of Revelations for yourself.

When He comes for His church (if you believe in the rapture), we will meet Him in the air, so we will definitely know that it is Him. When He comes to the earth the second time, He will come to rule for 1,000 years. You will know him when He gets here. He will be the one coming down out of the sky on a white steed. Read Revelation if you want to know more about what to look for.

it's not about knowing what he looks like...it's about knowing his voice.
EDIT: The second coming is in the clouds...Your relationship with him is how you hear and know him.
Revelation 2:7 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God.
Revelation 2:11 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death.
Revelation 2:17 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it.

The Scriptures promise that Jesus will return to this earth in the same manner that He left at His ascension--in a visible, literal, bodily, personal manner. Matthew 24:30 says, "They shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory." He will come in the clouds literally, as a personal being with a body of flesh and bones (Luke 24:36-43, 50, 51), and His coming will be visible. Scripture is clear on these facts.
"While they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight. And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven." Acts 1:9-11.
Every man, woman, and child living in the world when Jesus returns will see Him at His second coming. The staggering threefold (Luke 9:26) brightness of His coming will stretch from horizon to horizon, and the atmosphere will be charged with brilliant glory like lightning. No one will be able to hide. Every living soul will be forced to face Christ. Christ left no loophole for doubt or misunderstanding.
Note: The secret rapture so commonly believed and taught today is not in the Bible. It is a human invention. Nor is the second coming a spiritual coming into the heart at conversion. It does not take place at a man's death, nor is it figurative--to be manifested by better world conditions. These theories are all of human origin. The second coming will be a literal, worldwide, visible, personal appearance of Christ in the clouds to bring this world to an end and to reward or punish all men and women.
"Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him." Revelation 1:7. "For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be." Matthew 24:27.
"For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven ... and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord." 1 Thessalonians 4:16, 17. "We shall all be changed, ... and the dead shall be raised incorruptible. For ... this mortal must put on immortality." 1 Corinthians 15:51-53. "We look for ... the Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body." Philippians 3:20, 21.

the very fact that you ask this question verifies that he is not yet returned. scripture states that everyone will see him, even those that pierced him. In short, his return will be very clear to believers and non-believers alike.
