i have a friend who's roughly about 6'0 but weighs 223 lbs. He used to weigh 280. It's not muscle, he's just chunky/fat. For me simply being overweight (5'11 at 190lbs) has given me so much health trouble but for him, he claims he is perfectly healthy through his bloodwork results. Now for me I have recently lost weight back to my healthy ideal while he's still obese. I'd like to ask how is it possible to be that fat and have a perfectly healthy bloodwork (good cholesterol and liver) but for me just being overweight has given me fatty liver with inflammation and just bad health. He thinks he's invincible, that he'll never get diseases from his obesity because he's perfectly fine now at 26...is that true? Can being fat put you at risk for disease in the future even though you're fine now? Why is it that he can be fat and be "fine" as he claims but I can't?

To Jaide: my inflammed liver is most likely caused by fat infiltration, simply just too much fat in it. If you look in the BMI 190 at 5'10-5'11 is only 1-2 points from obese but its high end of overweight. My cholesterol and triglycerides are high because of high fat intake and lack of exercise, It seems my problems are just as bad as a person that is obese. So it IS overweight. So yes my weight has contributed to my fatty liver / inflammation. Please re-educate yourself on personal health

your friend is in denial. with out knowing what his body fat % is it's hard to say what his risk factor is. if his body fat is 20% or higher now at only 26 it will do nothing except increase as time goes by. regardless of how he feels or what his blood work says a person can not be "healthy" and have a high percentage of body fat. more than likely he lost weight very rapidly which always causes a great loss of muscle mass. based on statistical data I would put his body fat at close to 30% which is no where near healthy.

Well sometimes it takes a wake up call for people to realize they are NOT invincible. You are probably genetically more predisposed to having troubles than your friend. Just because people are over weight doesn't mean they are unhealthy. But yes it does take it's toll on the body and over time things will come up due to extra weight. It just takes longer for some people than others. Be happy for yourself and proud of yourself for getting healthier and wanting to do something about it. It can be frustrating when you know a friend is going down the wrong path, so just be supportive and be a good example! Take care and keep up the good work!

For one, 5'11 and 190 is NOT overweight enough to cause you health problems - your health problems were caused by something else, maybe poor diet but the extra weight alone was not the culprit with you.

For your friend, it's really good that he's lost as much weight as he has so just leave him alone. If you bug him it will cause him to feel hopeless and put the weight he has lost back on. Just mind your own business.

Perhaps he is more muscular than you with a larger body frame and higher bone density. You know a person can have a lot of fat AND a lot of muscle....it's the endomorph body type.

The only way to know for sure would for him to find out his body fat percentage. For a male, around 22% body fat is overfat and around 26% body fat is obese.

Just because he is healthy now does not mean that he will not get sick later (especially given that obesity is one the biggest risk factors for diseases like cancer, heart disease, diabetes, etc.). Just google "risk factor" and any of those diseases, and you'll get a host of articles listing obesity as being linked with increased risk.

How one's size affects one health depends on each person. Many of us who are fat or obese have normal bllodwork. Often cholesterol levels are hereditary or based on what foods one eats. My blookwork is fine and I am very obese at 620. I eat a lot of food but good food and not junk.

A lot of the chemistry has to do with family history. Your friends family may not have the health problems that yours has. In the end, the bad health may catch up to him.
