My question is this: For those who believe in a Divine Being who created all the species and has the ability and willingness to take action, why would he allow so many of these magnificent creatures to disappear from the face of the earth? Wouldn't this, indeed, suggest that either there is no God, or that if there is, He doesn't or can't get involved? If you believe in a perfect God, why would he create a species (in all God's alleged perfection) only to have it disappear? Don't forget: well over 90% of the animal species that have existed in the history of the world have gone extinct.
Don't even get me started on birth defects.

To Johnny N.: I'm not sure, but I think I've been insulted! OK, so you're basically saying in your delusional nonsensical way that God created all those creatures, only to let them (or cause them to, perhaps?) go extinct, so humans have petroleum? All I can say is -- WOW!!!. (I'm wondering why he just didn't put the petroleum in the earth in the first place).

Extinction gives rise to new species. The rise and fall of some living beings is the way humanity has come into existence. Remember to a believer death is simply the departure of this world and the returning to God.
A religious view is that all of creation warps to man, man being Gods representative on earth has domain over all these creatures. With the gift of free will it is our responsibility to ensure that biodiversity continues. And due to our free will (which is absolutely necessary to religious belief) bad things do occur.

God, is not in control of your life, YOU are. Don't you think that if God had absolute control of things life would be better? Where in the Bible does it say that God is in control of anything on earth? He does not have control, we have been given control of the earth and when bad things happen it is our fault, from animals dying to birth defects(it is a chemical or a chromosomal defect, still our fault). If something goes wrong, it's either our fault or it is due to the sin in the world.

birth defects are a sure sign that nature is at work. theres so many variables involved during the developement of a embryo, theres no wonder freakish things happen sometimes.
as far as i am concerned human beings were the worst thing to ever happen to this planet, and i too hate that so many animals are extinct now.

God could have indeed created life; how it evolved and changed over time was left up to the phsyical realities of the world it lived in.

Exactly. There is so much evidence that there is not a god that I just don't understand how easily an educated species can dismiss that evidence for a entirely different explanation.

Beliefs are personal and individual and mostly taught. Therefore I do not think we should confuse FACTS/TRUTH with belief.
It is unfortunate that most so called religions have brainwashed people to BELIEVE rather than investigate and learn.
Those who BELIEVE will always say what they BELIEVE is true. But it is for the impartial scientific methods to prove the FACTS/TRUTH.I
