Usually there is a issue with the brake switch when they won't shift out of park (you have no brake lights is my guess)

ON the older (1991-2001) turn the key to the first click after turning the key..shift to neutral and start the car.. just don't put in PARK!!!

On newer, there is a button but I have issues trying to trip it (I couldn't even begin to tell a non-tech how to find the trip lever)..so it's tow time for sure on those newer ones

But recommend a tow, unless you feel comfortable changing the brake switch as that is the problem about 95% of the time

Yes it could be brake pedal or a shift button but in automatic transmissions many of the times when your transmission oil is low it doesn't want to shift from park to drive or if your driving it, it wont shift from 1st gear to second check your transmission oil.
GOOD LUCK

I had that happen to one of my Cadillacs a long time ago. It turned out to be the interlock that holds it in Park until you press the brake pedal. Your Explorer might be different, but with that old car I had, you could kinda do it quick, at the same time, hitting the brake pedal and trying to pull it out of park. Most of the time it would work. Probably just needs to have that interlock thing adjusted. On my old car, there was an adjustment that fixed it.

It could be that the neutral safety switch is stuck. Try jiggling the shift lever. This can take a while. Make sure that your foot is on the brake and just keep moving or trying to move the lever. Watch out that you don't drain the battery. I've had this happen with my Explorer 5 times since I bought it.
Good luck!

Most cars (automatics) have some type of button there close to the shifter or somewhere else in the car that you can push and it will let you shift. It is there for when a car has to be towed. Look through your owners manual and see if you can find that button. Once you get it goen take it to a dealership and trade it in for a Toyota 4Runner. Fords SUCK!!!

maximum possibly the parking pawl drum is broken or the pin. take it to a save additionally could desire to be the shift lever is out of adjustment yet is unlikely. If the pawl or drum is broken the tail shaft has to return off and demands particular kit to do it. desire this helps. Many fords have this concern.

sometimes if you are parked on a grade it will get jammed in park.. i have had that happen to me a few times.. had to push the car forward or backward just a little to lessen the pressure on the transmission.. the trick is to move it and then hit the breaks so that it doesnt go back..

Sounds like the park/brake shift interlock switch is bad.
