First off, there is no list of deadly sins in the Bible. That's a Catholic concept that is also well known from Dante's Inferno. However, the Bible does say "You were bought at a price, therefore honor God with your body." So while being fat isn't a sin, not taking care of your health when you're able to is not honoring God.

For the same reason that there a Christians who still struggle with alcohol, tempers, pornography, gossip, and any other type of sin you can name. When you become a Christian, you do not automatically become "perfect" or "mature". It is a process that you have to go through.

You are right that gluttony is probably an area where the church is not teaching as strongly as it should. So not as many Christians are "convicted" to mature in that area as the are in some others.

CS Lewis tells about asking a similar question to God in his book "Mere Christianity". He know an atheist grocery store owner who was a kind and generous man, and a butcher who was stingy and often rude. He ask God how that could be. God's answer was simple. The grocer had been born with a nice dispostion, and raised in a loving home. So he started out kind and generous. But never improved himself any from there.

The butcher was born into an abuse family, where he was beaten and left with a bad stomach and continual pain his back. It was a daily struggle for him to be as "nice" as he was. And the butcher had grown and improved himself over the years. He just started so much further down that it would take a lifetime to get "up".

We have no clue what struggles those obese Christians may be dealing with, how much they may have already lost, or if there are physical complication that contribute to their size, etc.

Christians do not follow the 7 deadly sins. It is not part of the bible. All people sin, gluttony is just one sin.

it's a great question. the seven deadly sins are a church convention (rather than scriptural) made famous by dante in his great poem - the inferno. proverbs does list seven deadly sins, but htey're different than the ones most of us know (from se7en and other places).

Proverbs 6:16-19
There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that hurry to run to evil, a lying witness who testifies falsely, and one who sows discord in a family.

the bottom line is that we all tend to measure others by a different (usually harsher) standard than we measure ourselves. sad, but true. i often wonder at christians having the gaul to dismiss someone's claim to faith because they smoke or drink alcohol while they are shoving a big mac in their face!

One may take the approach and belief that we are created in God's image and the Bible does not define what that physical image is. I agree that glutony when exercised to the detriment of others may not be appropriate. However, that does not mean that those of us who are obese have sinned.

Romans 3:23
For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

Although I "thumbed up" Chris, gluttony *is* a sin, it's just not one listed in the Bible. The "seven deadly sins" do not exist as such in the Bible. However by definition they are all sins.

Gluttony is the evidence of covering over, hiding, the sin.

The sin lies not in the food, or in the act of eating the food, it lies in the erroneous belief, and in the negative/destructive energy that empowers that belief, which is driving the addiction!

The "bondage of Egypt" symbolizes the "addiciton of The World." AND WE ARE ALL IN BONDAGE!

There are obese christians (or so-called christians ) because they have not yet entered their spiritual temple and overturned the spiritual tables that hold their images or false beliefs, which Jesus illustrated in the physical temple.

False religious doctrine has taught them to worship the man instead of applying the works the man illustrated through his words and actions.

"clean the inside of the cup and the platter, and the outside of them will become clean."

It's called a "cafeteria" approach to religion. You pick what you like and you ignore the rest dear...

Most of the time, obesity is linked to bad eating habits and improper life style(not enough physical activities. Some cases, very few, are caused by medical conditions.

Another interesting correlation is that often poor eating habits go hand in hand with lack of education and so does religious superstitions and delusions.

So the key to healthy life style, without obesity or schizoid delusional mental disorders is education for all.

Let's promote education and religious superstitions and obesity will quietly fade away.
