The light comes on when there is a gallon of gas left. It could get you 22 miles in a new car. As old as yours is you had better stop before then.

It really depends on the vehicle, some set the light to go off when 1 gallon remains, some set it to go off when 2 gallons remain. You should be able to make some sort of mild judgement based on where the fuel needle is falling.
Can you make it 20 miles? Yes, it should not be an issue unless it's a curvy/hilly back road drive the entire way. Don't accelerate heavily, use just enough pressure on the pedal to keep the car moving. Also, don't use the defrost if you can avoid it....the defrost causes the A/C compressor to kick on (yes, even in the winter) and will burn more fuel.
I'm assuming once you reach this final destination there will be somebody there that can assist you in getting fuel. You should have approx. 45 miles or so remaining in your tank.
Hope this helps!

I have a '97 Sable (same car) and I've ran into this a number of times. A good rule of thumb so you don't get stranded is to just assume you have 10-15 miles left. That might sound on the low end, but that rule has prevented me from ever running out of gas completely. I think in reality it comes on with between 20-30 miles left. And of course that depends how you drive it too so the harder you drive, the fewer miles you'll have left.

you have particularly made it yet another 3 miles. ABC information did a mild hearted tale approximately this (by using fact some human beings even made YouTube movies). It seems which you will circulate approximately 50 to 60 MILES on the hwy and a pair of million/2 that on the line using. It would not seem to count lots how massive or small the autos have been. My Audi empty mild got here on, however the onboard laptop reported that I nonetheless had 20 miles (street using). all of them errors on the area of risk-free practices. === you artwork it somewhat is sensible by using fact on some roads (like NJ turnpike) some exits are 20 miles aside (or greater). So empty mild would not advise it somewhat is empty (you do no longer choose that, in case you may run out in minutes besides). It ability get gasoline quickly - genuine quickly. solid good fortune...

My car is about 25-30 miles. But my friend has a Mazda 6 and hers shut off right when the gas light came on! Go get some gas. :o)
If you really must wait.... drive the speed limit. My friend was once pulled over by a cop and he asked why she was speeding and she said because she was about to run out of gas. Well little did she know, cars eat more gas the faster you go. =P

probably another 30. maybe 50.I have a toyota camry and it's getting 38 miles to the gallon!!
You really should put gas in the car with the temps being up and down, it creates condensation in the tank and will make the car run poorly... also, I would assume most cars have some kind of gunk in the bottom the gas tank, do you really want to put that through your engine?? It's cheaper to buy gas than an engine.

That's a risky bet. My car has a 2 gallon reserve, so the light is SUPPOSED to come on when i've only got 2 gallons left. But, there are times when it comes on with 1 gallon left.
Your owners manual says that with 1/16 of a tank, this light comes on. You tank is a 16 gallon tank. So, you have a gallon left when the light comes on, but that's not 100%. Depending on what kind of mileage you are getting, you could be safe. Better to go get some fuel, though...

You'll be alright as long as you drive smart. Easily accelerate, don't rapidly change speed, and fill up shortly thereafter. I generally believe that 25 miles is a good conservative estimate for all vehicles as far as how far you can drive after the light comes on. Of course this also takes into account that your tires are properly inflated and your engine is not way out of tune.

Usually 50 miles on the Ford's (that's where Ford sets them at the factory).. but remember, car that old and fuel gauge that old ... I had one leave me on the side of the road still showing gas in the tank.... best bet is to not play the guessing game
