Hi. I've taken Wellbutrin for quite some time for mild ADHD and depression and it was great when I first started in and I thought it was continuing to do me good.
I went on vacation last week, and my bag was lost. I was without Wellbutrin for 8 days. I felt more energetic and alert. Now that I'm home, I don't want to take it again. My husband hasn't noticed a behavor change, but does want me back on it.
Is it possible for a person to outgrow the need to have medicine?

Thanks everyone so far :) I do intend to call my doc this week, just wondering what different folks think of this.

The standard course of treatment for depression (though not for ADHD) is one year and then a reevaluation to see if the medicine is still necessary.
It couldn't hurt to tell your doctor that it is time to reevaluate your treatment.
You should never just stop other types of anti-depressants, but Wellbutrin is milder. After 8 days, you probably are seeing a clear picture of your health without the medicine. If your symptoms return within the next week, then you have a different situation of your hands.
You are the boss of your treatment. But believe it or not, doctors do actually know some things.
That is great if you are truly doing better!
In conclusion, yes, you can outgrow your need for Welbutrin when used to treat depression.

It has been a while since i have worked in mental health but i do know that some medication take weeks to start working to there full effects and take weeks to wear off fully. It can also be quite dangerous to stop certain drugs "cold turkey". I am not sure what wellbutrin is (this is the trade name not that actual name of the drug) so i cannot give you specific advice on this drug. But you should discuss it with your treating doctor or nurse.

Yes it is possible that a person outgrows the need for medication, however it is not as common as one might think.
In general, the patient is not the best person to determine if the medication is no longer needed. However, if you can describe your feelings to your doctor, you can guide him/her in determining if you are ready for less or no medication.
As a percentage, whenever the patient decides to stop medication without consulting, it turns out to be the wrong decision in the majority of cases (however, there are cases where it works). Because of this percentage thing, if I were in your husband's place, I'd want you to either go back on it or consult your doctor about staying off. Once you consult your doctor and the doctor agrees to you staying off, then I'd feel more at ease.
Bu then, I'm not your husband (nor your mother). You decide.

Maybe you never needed to be on Wellbutrin. Those anti-depressants can have the OPPOSITE effect if you don't really have the afflictions that they generally treat.
If you feel good right now, you might start crashing here in a few days. You should see the doctor who prescribed it. And maybe you need to see a therapist for the depression-- just to make sure that you won't relapse.

I do believe that the wellbutrin will stay in ur system for weeks after u stop taking it. After all, it takes two weeks or longer to get into ur blood stream. I would strongly suggest u talking to ur doctor. After all, he has ur charts and know u the best. Good luck hun.

It is possible to not need medication, but I would never stop taking a medication without a doctor's advise. Your senses are a bit dulled when on a psychotropic medication. Of course initially you are going to feel alive and fresh when not taking it. But you don't know what the long term repercussions are going to be.

As a matter of caution you should discuss the reduction or elimination of any medicines with your physician. To take the best care of yourself you can communicate with your provider.
Here's to a healthy you.
Cheers!

If it has already been 8 days without and you feel good, don't start again, but let your doctor know what you have done.
