They don't want people to walk in and take the stuff without paying.

People will still walk in. At the store I used to work in we would unlock the doors 15 minutes before opening for the employees to get in. I used to have shoo people out. They would be so dumbfounded when I explained we were closed. Even though our hours were posted they still walked in. I had people opening the doorsbefore opening and after closing asking if were open. Alot wanted me to open early/close late just for them. None of them ever could grasp the fact that we do not have registers open and no I can't take a check/credit card number/voucher because I have no idea if it is good or not and I am not taking your word.

I read a funny news story awhile back. A dollar store was closed for Memorial day. The closed sign was up, lights were off, music was playing, the doors were unlocked. There were a bunch of people in there shopping and waiting at the register. Most were quoted saying well the music was on... I thought they were open and we thought it was strange that no one was here to ring us out. No one commented on the fact that there was a closed sign and the lights were off!. Luckily a manager was able to get in and lock up the store. Surprisingly nothing was taken!

I sometimes need to go into my shop when it's closed to do things that would be difficult to do when we're open. I lock the door and use the "closed" sign. If there were other people in the store, I wouldn't be able to get my work done. That's why I'm there while we're closed. Yet, even with the door locked, people peer in the windows, bang on the door and ask to be let in. So my question is: why don't people understand that store owners need to do things other than tend customers in order to keep their stores running?

My lady manages retail.

She locks the door when the store is closed because otherwise folks will come in and shop anyway. She's had this happen, and people get very rude when they are not allowed to purchase. They do not seem to understand that the cash register is closed, and the money already counted for the not.

If the employees did not lock the door when the store is closed, they would never get to go home.

Because some people don't notice the closed sign or simply ignore it on purpose and go inside anyway. Some people think it's more important that they can do their shopping than the staff actually getting to go home after a long day at work.

Simply because some people would still peek or inquire disregarding the closed sign so even if there is someone in the store they might not like to be bothered by people who cannot read or for more obvious reasons, to lessen the worry on having anything stolen. I find this question quite irritating and obvious. Put up a business and maybe you'll see how much security measures you'll take to protect it.

Believe me, some people don't read the sign or just plain ignore it. I hate the ones who forget to turn off their open sign when they are closed. It's so embarassing to try and open the door and it's been locked!!!!!!!

So people like you don't enter and annoy them.
When a business closes for the day, the till is emptied and counted; the cash regester tapes are checked against the amount taken in that day and the money taken to the bank.

Sometimes people might not see the sign and just walk right in. Or sometimes they might say, "Well, the sign says closed, but the door's open, so let's just see if they'll help me..."

Because people would disregard the closed sign and come in anyways.
